Druggie Chic: Is Joaquin on Drugs, Too?

Drug use has been in the news a lot lately. Alex Rodriguez admitted to taking steroids. A druggie priest in Illinois was sentenced for dealing coke from his rectory. And we have all heard Michael Phelps--and his 8 friends who got arrested--are tangled up in some serious reefer madness.

Also this week, did you see Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman? I got a buzz just watching.

But I'm not convinced that he's on drugs. I think he's just weird.

I laughed my hiney off when Letterman asked Joaquin if he was the Unabomber. And as Joaquin scratched his mangy beard and uttered syllables, Letterman said, "I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight."

Sure, it would be sad if Joaquin Phoenix turned out to be a major druggie. I mean, I was a heartbroken teenager when his brother River Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993 outside of The Viper Room. I just want to be clear about my opinion: Druggies are not chic, and being a drug addict definitely sucks.

But I believe Joaquin's act is a hoax. The tip off was when he said he was going into hip hop, which Cafe MichelleL has written about in Entertainment Buzz. Can you see him getting down with Snoop?

I think he's trying to be a modern-day Andy Kaufman, the comedic prankster of the '70s and '80s. The movie, Man on the Moon was about Andy Kaufman, who was also weird.

Either way, it's clear there isn't much difference between Joaquin Phoenix and my 3-year-old. They'll both do any silly thing for attention. Well, except that I am absolutely sure my kid's hardest drug is a Gummy Vite.

What do you think about Joaquin's bizarre behavior?
