Salma Hayek with kids who helped raise money for the cause.
I was psyched to be invited to the Salma Hayek One Pack = One Vaccine press conference today. Maybe you caught her segment this morning on the Today Show. Anyway, she met with us mommy bloggers and press folks this afternoon to talk about her recent heartbreaking and inspiring trip to Sierra Leone.
I got to sit in the front row, and I swear Salma Hayek looked at me and smiled. Or maybe she had a rock in her eye.
Salma was in Sierra Leone last fall with the good people from UNICEF and Pampers Diapers. Together, they're trying to bring tetanus vaccines to this and other developing countries. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT)--often contracted from sharp instruments during home births--kills up to 21 percent of all infants in Sierra Leone.

Salma Hayek
Tetanus--a bacteria that produces extremely potent toxins that attack the nervous system--is no longer a threat in the United States and other fortunate nations because we have easy access to this cheap vaccine. It costs 7 cents per shot.
And we can all help by buying one pack of Pampers with the UNICEF logo on it. Pampers will donate one vaccine for every purchase.
But more than that, Salma met women and saw clinics in Sierra Leone that affected her deeply. See more about her trip tonight on ABC's Nightline at 11:35 p.m. EDT. I even read that Salma Hayek was so upset by a malnourished child that she gave him her breast. At that time, she was still nursing her toddler, Valentina.
This is the second year for the Pampers/UNICEF program, a wonderful cause to end women's and children's suffering. I was feeling Salma's humanitarian spirit. I got so into her stories from Sierra Leone that I finally tore my eyes away from her amazingly beautiful and dangerous 5-inch stiletto boots with steel toes. She was able to walk normally in those things.
I was feeling all zen and thankful and happy--and full of free chocolate chip cookies--on my way home. And that's when a pickpocketer right outside on Gold Street in downtown Manhattan started fumbling around with my gigantic bag. In a gut reaction that surprised even me, I turned around and punched him. He said, "Lady, I wasn't messing with you," and ran off. I think this poor, unskilled pickpocketer was like 15 years old.
Not one to be easily shaken, I'm still psyched that I kind of got to meet Salma Hayek today while learning more about this campaign. I also feel good that I have bought a lot of Pampers in the last 17 months. My baby boy's nasty, stinking butt might have saved a child out there somewhere.
And I still swear she smiled at me.

That's a great cause. I wish I could afford pampers, I have to buy the cheapest diapers I can find. And good quick thinking with the pickpocketer!!!
that is really great that she does that, I used to buy pampers easy ups but I don't have to anymore, and I donated my points to her campaign. I watched the thing on tv where she fed the baby her breast its so amazing how those people don't get so freaked out like they do here in the US, breastfeeding is such a wonderful gift and for her to do that on tv with her fame is just INSPIRING to me.
i also love that she gave the baby her breast. instead of standing there watching a baby die, she went outside the usa "comfort zone" and did the right thing. so many times you see a celebrity mom on tv promoting their cause, and you have to wonder how involved they really are, or how much they really care, or if they just do it for the feel good publicity. but to offer your breast to a baby you dont know in a foreign country...thats dedication. so much of hollywood girls would offer the breast to a strange man, but NEVER a "strange" baby. good for her. this makes me more aware of her cause, and makes me more apt to support it where i can, although i cant buy pampers all the time...
I love ivelostmyself's answer there. Giving her breast to another child was wonderful. I would have cried hearing that. I almost did just from reading about it. what a wonderful woman.
I buy Pampers all the time(I have 2 in diapers). Not only is the money going for a good cause, but they are also great diapers.
Wow~ I am so glad I buy Pampers! Everytime I buy something else for my son, they leak. We are a strictly Pamper house now;) And if you sign up for Target coupons, you can use the manufacturer coupon from P&G AND use the Target coupon AT THE SAME TIME! Saves me a BUNDLE! I also try to shop when Target has their "free" giftcard promo for buying 2 packs of diapers~ last week I got a 10$ GC and used coupons to save me more than buying the "cheapest" brand out there.
That is awesome that you met Salma~ she probably did look straight at you and smile~ I know I would;)
Rachell, Pleassssse become a member @pampers.com and they will offer you coupons. ALSO, CVS Pharmacy runs at least biweekly (which is how often i buy) specials on pampers, huggies and other brands. Sometimes as low as 8.99! If you don't get a flyer for CVS in the mail, go into the store and get an extra care card and they will immediately give you offers and coupons, etc.
Pampers are such awesome diapers, even if they aren't the right size, I've never had a leak!! They are basically a cure for diaper rash in themselves. I love pampers so much and I've even stopped buying the large quantity boxes so that i can help with the unicef donations as much as possible, since i can't afford to give a cash gift!
Pampers rock way more than I do!!!
What a fantastic cause and a beautiful story =)
