Caffeine Can Make You Hallucinate

I'm on my second cup of coffee today, and this one is decaf. I am not a caffeine fiend because it makes me all jittery, kind of like I'm upside down on a roller coaster.

So I'm not shocked to read this story today at LiveScience. People who drink 3 cups of  coffee or the equivalent amount of caffeine are more likely to hallucinate.

Seriously, dude. Drink too much joe, and we're three times more likely to hear voices and see things that are not there.


Researchers add that while most people who drink tons of coffee are not running around hallucinating, their daily functioning might be affected. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that makes us more alert and less drowsy. Caffeine is the world's most widely used drug.

In moderation, coffee can increase alertness. Check Cafe Kim's post on how to Save Money on Coffee. But in excess, caffeine can be intoxicating, cause nervousness, irritability, anxiety, muscle twitching, insomnia, headaches, heart palpitations and hallucinations.
