plus-size pregnancy
CafeMom/Leah Cooper

Search for "maternity photoshoot" on Google and social media, and you'll find options galore for showing off your bump, ranging from dressing like a mermaid to lounging in a milk bath.  But there's one type of woman you won't see in the vast majority of commercial pregnancy photography:  Those who wear size 14 and up.

That's right: When it comes to pregnancy, plus-size women are invisible.

But the truth is, over 60% of American women fall into the plus-size category -- and plenty of them are having healthy and happy pregnancies.

CafeMom wants to change this with a unique photoshoot:  What Plus-Size Pregnancy Really Looks Like.  We will photograph plus-size women in all their diverse glory at every stage of pregnancy (and postpartum, too), focusing on the beauty of a bigger bump. We hope to create photographs that will help other curvy women understand how their body will change during pregnancy and help them find their path to body confidence.

If you're a plus-size mom or mom-to-be, we hope you'll apply to share your story with our readers!  Here are all the details:

Who We're Looking For

* Pregnant women who wear size 14 and up, who live in the New York City or tri-state area

* Plus-size women who have given birth in the last year

* Women are willing to be open and real about their feelings surrounding pregnancy, motherhood and body image

*Candidates available to travel to New York City for one day on Jan 8 or 9.

What You Can Expect

* A one-day photoshoot in CafeMom's studio with professional hair and makeup done (and yes, you will be asked to show off your bump! But in a supportive, non-exploitive way. The photos will go unretouched, save for lighting editing.)

* Video interviews with CafeMom about your hopes and fears around pregnancy, motherhood, and body image.

How to apply:

Send an email to with a photograph (full body preferred), your due date, and a brief description of yourself and why you want to be a part of this project.

We hope you'll join our quest to lift the veil on plus-size pregnancy and show America that you won't be invisible anymore.
