Danielle Brooks's Letter to Her Teenage Self Will Make You Laugh Then Cry

Everyone who watches Netflix's Orange Is the New Black knows that Taystee is one of the most pivotal characters on the show. She is confident, smart, brazen, and an all-around badass. And the truth is, the actress who plays Taystee -- Danielle Brooks -- is all of those things and more IRL. 


Her latest act of badassery? Penning a a hysterical and honest open letter to her 15-year-old self for Refinery29.

As one of the site's body-positive ambassadors for its 67 Percent Project, which aims to help increase plus-size visibility in media, Brooks decided to help kick off its annual bo-po campaign "Take Back the Beach" with an 11-point-long list of advice she wished she'd received.


In it, she tells her younger self to remember to drink water, keep journaling, and forget the boys who wouldn't date her (they grew up to be unambitious loads anyways) with candor and sincerity.

"You really quit cheerleading because of how you felt you looked in your skirt? Okay!" she honestly wrote. "Never quit anything again because you're scared of what others might think of you -- unless you become a stripper, only exception. But even then, quit because you want to."

But her best piece of advice was all about self-love and empowerment:

"Love your stretch marks Danie. They are the roadmap of your strength."

Whether you're 15 or 50, her words of wisdom are ones everyone should get down with.
