Carvalho explains how deeply she was moved by helping these women move forward:

I was suddenly struck by the idea of providing free tattoos to women who were left with scars following domestic violence or mastectomies. Each tattoo would act as an instrument for empowerment and a self-esteem booster.

Since launching her project, the artist has been contacted by women worldwide who feel a sense of "sisterhood and camaraderie" because of the initiative.

What an amazing thing for Carvalho to use her artistic talent to help these women feel better about themselves and their bodies. She shares a bit of each victim's story to raise awareness. In turn, she says, as each woman explains what she has been through she begins to heal.

Good for her for coming up with a way to convert what had to be a terrible reminder of violence into an empowering symbol of moving forward.
