Abigail Breslin Speaks Out About Selena Gomez's 'Weight Gain' & It's Brilliant

abigail breslin zac posenWhen Selena Gomez booked her trip to Mexico, so may not have suspected that her beautiful "bikini-grams" were going to turn into one of the top celeb news stories of the month, because a few ridiculous, nasty trolls fat-shamed the pop star. (Gross -- we're still shaking our heads!) But as her BFF Taylor Swift would sing, haters gonna hate, hate, hate! And now Selena has even more reason to shake it off.

Turns out, actress Abigail Breslin and Selena are friends, and Abigail has zero patience for judgy jerks. Abigail took to her Tumblr on Sunday to come to Selena's defense, writing:

All this stuff about Selena Gomez online in her bathing suit is RIDICULOUS. Everyone is always saying how we shouldn’t judge each other, so why are you commenting on a gorgeous, talented and smart young girls [sic] body when she’s on the beach having fun with her friends AND SHE LOOKS AMAZING.

True story! She went on to rip into society's unrealistic beauty standards -- especially young women and celebs are subject to, writing:

How are young girls supposed to grow up normally and not feel bad about themselves and not develop eating disorders if it’s literally national headline news that a THIN girl may or may not have put on a few pounds, and YET still remains THIN?

Yes, it is totally wrong and outrageous. Although I do feel like her anger is a bit misdirected; perhaps not all, but quite a bit of media focused on the crazy response from trolls and the fact that Selena fired back. In other words, most of the headlines were body positive and supportive of Selena looking stunning.

Nonetheless, a lot of nastiness has cropped up in this discussion -- and the issue extends way beyond Selena Gomez. It feels like fat-shaming of women in Hollywood -- Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Pink, etc. -- is more pervasive than ever.

Abigail's proposed solution: that we all take the time we spend making each other feel bad to make each other feel good. And "also, if we taught girls they had more newsworthy qualities than how they fit into a bikini, we’d have a lot more happy girls."

Bravo to that! And the more we talk about this, and call out the crazy and mean for what it is, the better. At the same time, we'd all do well to spread the body positive word.

As Abigail put it:

Selena, you look amazing and more importantly look like you’re having fun. Keep rocking those bikinis.

Surely, that's a message we could all stand to bear in mind. Nothing makes you more beautiful than being yourself, having fun, and glowing from inner happiness -- which are all things we can't allow haters and fat-shamers to take away from us.

How do you feel about Abigail's response?
