Roseanne Barr Is Losing Her Sight But Not Her Feisty Spirit

roseanne barrIt's happening slowly but surely: Roseanne Barr is losing her vision. The actress revealed this news in an interview with the Daily Beast, saying she has macular degeneration and glaucoma. In addition to her deteriorating vision, she is also experiencing pain and pressure in her eyes.

Barr says she is treating the pain with marijuana."It's good medicine, you know," she tells the Daily Beast. But it can't save her sight, unfortunately. And doctors can't tell Barr when she'll lose her sight completely.

No, they can’t. My vision is closing in now. It’s something weird. But there are other weird things. That one’s harsh, ’cause I read a lot, and then I thought, ‘Well, I guess I could hire somebody to read for me and read to me.’ But I like words and I like looking. You do what you have to do. I just try and enjoy vision as much as possible -- y’know, living it up. My dad had it, too.

She later clarified via Twitter that she's not blind, yet, nor does she expect to lose her sight completely.

According to the National Eye Institute, Age-Related Macular Degeneration is the deterioration of the macula, the part of the eye that gives us sharp, central vision of objects directly in front of us. And while it doesn't cause complete blindness on its own, "the loss of central vision in AMD can interfere with simple everyday activities, such as the ability to see faces, drive, read, write, or do close work, such as cooking or fixing things around the house." Glaucoma is a group of conditions that can cause vision loss and also high pressure on the eyes. Barr described that pressure-caused pain in another tweet.

This all sounds awful for Barr. My mom, who is about the same age as Barr, has been having serious eye problems, too. She's been telling me how frustrating and difficult it is to have your vision severely impaired. Even when you're not completely blind, having compromised vision is disorienting. Everything takes longer. And the strain and pressure are difficult.

I'm glad Barr has access to marijuana since it seems to be helping. She may be tiring more quickly these days, but it sounds like she's as firery and passionate as ever. She is currently promoting a documentary film about her 2012 presidential run, Roseanne for President!

How would losing your vision even partially affect your daily life?
