Giuliana Rancic Silences Haters Who Say She's Too Thin

giuliana rancic2015 hasn't exactly been an easy year for Giuliana Rancic so far. With the controversy surrounding the Oscars, the aftermath of said controversy filled with apologies all-around, the falling apart of Fashion Police, the E! host has enough on her plate -- without also having to field all the speculation about why she's so thin. And yet, Giuls addresses the sensitive subject in People's latest issue.

She explained to the weekly mag:

Some people were saying, 'The cancer is probably back.' And they were accusing me of every eating disorder. I thought to myself, 'God, if someone really thought I had an eating disorder, what a horrible way to approach it.'

But the fact of the matter is that the 40-year-old celeb mama is not battling cancer OR an eating disorder. She explained that her low weight is actually the result of a cancer-suppressing drug she's been taking since 2012. "I started noticing that I was eating a lot, but not gaining weight at all," Giuliana says. "I was concerned."

So she spoke with her oncologist, and he explained that the medication could alter her metabolism and cause weight loss. Clearly something that's out of her hands and ridiculously minor, considering her priority is simply keeping disease at bay!

Of her reaction to the criticism, Giulana explained:

It's really hurtful. I'm sorry that some people think I'm disgustingly skinny, as they put it, but there's nothing I can do. I'm lucky that I even have the type of cancer that reacts to the medicine. ... I eat more than any of my friends. I eat a very robust, healthy, balanced diet and dessert almost every night. I'm not hiding from anything.

What's more, she shares that her struggle to gain while on this Rx has taken a toll on her body image, explaining that she wants to "look fit and beautiful and sexy, and I can't." In fact, a high-profile publication wanted to feature her but backed out because she was deemed too thin, and obviously Giuliana felt that was "really hurtful," because she's "doing the best" she can.

She elaborates:

I never want my weight to distract people from what I do. But it is becoming a distraction, [whenever] I wear something sleeveless, show my arms, my back.

Ugh. Wow. As amazing as it is that she's being so forthright about her personal health challenges, the fact that she even has to defend herself to the haters is a shame.

Then again, how can she not? When your medical situation is influencing your weight, it's frustrating as hell to have to deal with people's assumptions about what you're up against or why you look the way you do.

Bravo to Giuls for speaking up and setting the record straight. With hope, doing so will cause her critics to bite their tongues, and teach us all a lesson to think twice about making a knee-jerk judgment about someone's well-being based on nothing more than their outward appearance.

What do you think about Giuls' confession?
