Julianne Hough 'Shocks' Herself to Stay in Shape

julianne houghDancer-turned-actress Julianne Hough has one of the most rockin' bods in all of Hollywood, so clearly, the woman has always been a pro at sticking to a healthy diet and working out like a beast, right? Actually, not so much! The Dancing with the Stars judge tells Shape she only recently started forcing herself to get into a smart but challenging routine: a regular, early bedtime!

"I've started forcing myself to go to bed earlier, because if I don't get enough sleep, I'm miserable," Julianne admits. "I get cloudy, my eyes hurt, and I have to take a nap. But when I’m well-rested, I am rockin'!" Awesome!

And more snoozing isn't the only secret she has for feeling and looking amazing.

It carries me all the way through." Her fave dish: "An egg-white omelet or a scramble with veggies like asparagus, mushrooms, spinach, and kale." Yum!

More from The Stir: Julianne Hough's Secrets to Staying in Shape Are Surprisingly Simple

She also fills her morning by exercising after her breakfast. To stay challenged and engaged, she says:

I'll see my trainer Astrid [McGuire] ... or hit a class at Tracy Anderson. I like to shock my body by doing different things.

She also devotes time in the morning to "sitting quietly and expressing gratitude during 'a moment of peace.'"

Okay, so while it may not sound like it, yeah, this is a LOT to commit to every day. Even the thought of getting to bed in time to score eight hours of sleep may seem like a daunting task for many of us.

Still, I love how -- at their core -- Julianne's "secrets" are all simple, routine tweaks you can adopt to feel healthier and happier. It's not like she's gone all Gwyneth on us and is advocating slurping soup made with some rare and expensive ingredient or devoting hours to the gym. No, it sounds like for her, staying fit is all about committing to taking care of herself in realistic ways. Love that!

This is definitely proof that doing something as subtle as subbing out waffles for an omelette at breakfast or mixing up your workout (switch from the elliptical to treadmill, try a Pilates class, etc.) can create positive, significant change.

And hey, sounds like a much more palatable plan than an extreme overhaul like a detox or scary intense workout plan. And if by making little changes (like a few more ZZZs every night), we can feel as "rockin'" as Julianne, who wouldn't want to give it a shot?!

What small changes have you made in your health routine that have led to a major payoff?
