One Twin Gives Up Sugar & The Other Fat to Make a Startling Discovery

male dietNot only are twins Alexander and Chris Van Tulleken absolutely handsome, they're also willing to take a challenge. The two 35-year-old self-proclaimed "gluttons" (and doctors!) recently took on an experiment to see which diet was better for the body: a no-carb, no-sugar diet (Chris) or a low-fat diet (Alexander).

The rules? They were allowed to eat as much as they wanted, except they had to stick by their unique guidelines. With similar exercise routines and lifestyles, any changes in their bodies at the end of the experiment would be down to the diets.

The results? Alex lost more weight than Chris, but Chris excelled at all other aspects. He had more energy. He was a quicker thinker. He seemed ... happier.

But the ultimate conclusion? That regardless of who "did better," neither diet was a GOOD idea.

Sure, it's easy to limit yourself by choosing to go no-carb or completely eliminating white foods -- for example. However, at the end of the day, a diet is successful if it's something you can keep up for the rest of your life. Chris, for example, thought that he would stick with a no-carb diet even after the experiment was over, but found that his energy skyrocketed the second he dabbled in them again.

Chris' realization is easy to relate to -- it reminds us that there is a purpose for all of the different components of a healthy, balanced diet. Sure, nixing carbs may make you lose weight. But will that weight loss be sustainable? Will it be something that you can easily maintain? No, no it won't.

The twins' other conclusions? That if you're looking to lose weight, it's easier if you avoid processed foods made with sugar and fat. The reason why? Well, those foods affect the brain in a completely different way than natural foods. That, and it's hard for anyone to resist eating too much of 'em.

Sounds to me like this whole little experiment made these brothers realize how important it is to eat clean and balanced. The golden rule? Everything in moderation, and you'll be good to go.

Watch the twins challenge one another in a bike race below. Man, that's a whole lot of hunky Spandex.

Have you ever tried eliminating excess fat, sugar, or carbs from your diet?
