NeNe Leakes made headlines last month when she landed in the hospital with blood clots in her lungs. The life-threatening medical situation was scary to say the least -- and one that could've been a lot worse if she hadn't tended to it ASAP. In fact, on her blog, she noted that "most people don't recognize the symptoms of blood clots and don't go to the doctor and that's when the big problems start happening." No wonder she's feeling particularly thankful to be alive!
But at the same time, the Real Housewives of Atlanta and Glee star seems a bit frustrated that her recovery is taking as long as it has.
NeNe told E! News:
I'm not 100 percent, but I'm trying to get there. It's been tough, but I've been pretty strong. I'm coming back. It takes about six weeks to really get back to feeling yourself, but I'm on blood thinners now. I would have to say I'm about 80 percent. I'm doing a lot better.
See, doesn't she almost sound ... apologetic? Like she thinks she should be back in fighting form already.
Recovering from a health crisis like this is challenging for anyone, but I feel like it is particularly hard on someone like NeNe, who admits she's "always working" and is used to go-go-going 24/7/365. It can feel impossible to slow down, put your to-do list on the backburner and focus on taking care of yourself. But it is so important. Because really, how effective can we be if we dive back into our daily grind before we're ready?
This is true particularly in cases where the health issue was brought on by stress. And considering how studies link stress to changes in the way blood clots, which increases risk of heart attack, being spread to thin could have been a factor for NeNe. It's good to know that she's on blood thinners, doing better, and on her way back, but let's hope she takes her time to do it right. Recovery is never a race.
Have you ever struggled to let yourself rest and recover?
