Remember back when Demi Lovato went to rehab in 2010 for "emotional and physical issues"? We all sort of just assumed that it was related to her struggles with bulimia and depression ... but now, the former Disney star is clearing things up and coming clean about the shocking truth: She had a serious cocaine addiction.
"With my drug use I could hide it to where I would sneak drugs. I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine, and I would bring it on airplanes," the 21-year-old confessed to Access Hollywood. "I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep, and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it." This in spite of Demi even having her very own "sober companion," who was supposed to be watching her "24/7." So scary. She also elaborated on her addiction to alcohol ...
I was going to the airport and I had a Sprite bottle just filled with vodka, and it was just nine in the morning, and I was throwing up in the car, and this was just to get on a plane to go back to LA to the sober living house that I was staying at ... I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it.
And then, there came a point where she hit rock bottom. She explains:
When I hit that moment I was like, it’s no longer fun when you’re doing it alone. I think at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, 'Oh my God ... that is alcoholic behavior.' [It’s] no longer, I’m young and rebellious and out having fun, it was, wow, I’m one of those people ... I gotta get my sh*t together.
Thank goodness Demi had that realization -- and so young, too! At only 21, she really has her whole life ahead of her. Hopefully, now she's living it to the fullest -- clean, sober, and genuinely happy! She also deserves a pat on the back for being SO candid about her demons. It's bold, brave, and courageous to lay it all out there. Of course, she's promoting her new memoir (which was released last month), but it seems also realizes that her story could inspire others to clean up their acts. Surely, it will.
Are you shocked by Demi's confessions? Do you think she's a good role model to other people struggling in similar ways?
