Pearl CantrellIt's been said that bacon makes everything better, but 105-year-old Pearl Cantrell  of Richland Springs, Texas, goes one step further. She says bacon is the key to a long, happy life.

Yep, she's serious. She recently told KRBC when asked about the secret to her longevity, "I love bacon, I eat it every day. I don't feel as old as I am, that's all I can say. I want other people to eat bacon, I tell them too. My kids all eat it."

Well, if it's gotten her to 105, that's good enough for us, right my fellow cured meat lovers?

I'm always fascinated by stories of people living such long, healthy lives. We're always hoping to discover that one tip, or trick that we might embrace to do the same. Usually the tips are things like eating healthy, or avoiding alcohol, or something that's not nearly as much fun as bacon. So Pearl's advice ... I'm taking as a delicious pearl of wisdom.

Of course, pork producers were happier than pigs in mud with her enthusiastic endorsement -- especially after all the reports that have found meat to be less than good for your health over the years. Oscar Mayer actually sent one of its Wienermobiles to her home to personally deliver bacon to her. She even got to ride "shot-bun" in it, as it drove her though town.

If only a long, healthy life was as simple as bacon, or any one food. The fact is that we can and should do what we can to eat healthy, exercise, and take care of ourselves, but so much of it comes down to genetics, and, frankly, just luck. And who knows, maybe bacon. BLT, please!

Do you think there's one secret to longevity?
