Chris Christie Tells Doctor to 'Shut Up' for Saying He'll Die in Office if He Doesn't Lose Weight (VIDEO)

OMG 21

chris christie shut upEver since he's been in the spotlight, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has endured everything from total tongue-lashings to teasing galore about his weight. He clearly has a healthy sense of humor about it, even going so far as to jokingly nosh on a doughnut during a sit-down with Letterman recently. But yesterday, he decided to fire back at one of his critics: Connie Mariano -- who was President Bill Clinton's White House doctor and retired Navy rear admiral. Mariano randomly volunteered her opinion on his health this week in a CNN interview, saying, "I'm a physician more than I'm a Democrat or a Republican. And I'm worried about this man dying in office." To that, Christie had to say ... "She should shut up!"

Ouch! While I think there was a slightly more diplomatic/less Jersey way of putting it, I have to agree with the governor. Where does this woman get off?!

Christie elaborated his case:

I find it fascinating that a doctor in Arizona who's never met me, never examined me, never reviewed my history or medical records, knows nothing about my family history could make a diagnosis from 2,400 miles away. She must be a genius.

For. Real. Worse yet, the governor noted that his 12-year-old son came to him after hearing the blip on the news ... "He said, ‘Dad, are you going to die?’ I mean, c'mon. This is irresponsible stuff,” Christie remarked. Yes, yes, it is.

But Mariano defended herself by saying, "It doesn’t take a physician to look at him and observe that he’s overweight." True. In fact, he looks obese, really. But what does that even MEAN? It's truly shameful that despite being a supposedly licensed physician, Mariano is no better than the general, ignorant public that runs around thinking they know everything about Governor Christie's health, crying, "That guy's fat! He can't run for public office, because he's too fat! He must be unhealthy! He must be headed for a heart attack!" What do they know?

No matter what we think, we can't know for sure what's going on with someone's physical or mental health just by looking at them. Yes, Governor Christie's overweight -- that's obvious. But as recent research has showed, being overweight doesn't necessarily mean what we think it does. It doesn't necessarily mean heart risk or an early death. There are overweight people who are healthier than thin ones.

No one knows how healthy or unhealthy Christie is other than him, his actual doctor, and his nearest and dearest. And to make a judgment call or diagnosis attempt of anyone's personal situation without having actually examined them or their medical records, as Christie noted, is just plain irresponsible.

What do you think about the doctor's comments? Are you with her or Christie?

I like Christie for the same reason many people dislike him - he pulls no punches.  As long as he doesn't have serious anger issues I prefer someone who says it as it is, straight out, no beating around the bush or trying to please everyone instead of saying the truth.

The Doctor was out of line because she does not know him and has no interaction with him medically.  Yes he's overweight, yes it's likely that losing some weight would be helpful.  But no it doesn't mean he's going to drop dead tomorrow.  People who think he's too heavy to be in office should really learn a little about our past presidents.  Especially William Taft who served his time just fine and held other offices besides; yet many think wouldn't get elected today simply because we focus too much on the outward.  At the same time look up the 16 year old swimmer from England who was an olympic hopeful and dropped dead at her home this week.

Chris Christie, 100%

That bitch needs to shut her pie hole.

I have to admire his restraint. He is constantly hammered about his weight and really dose a good job at not blowing his top. All the unsolicited advise that he gets from people is getting old. They aren't saying anything he doesn't know! If the only attack you have is on someone's looks/weight then you should just drop it.

According to Chris Christie, he has stated that he is in good health and that has been the report from his doctor. You can be big and healthy. Not everyone is a small. I agree with him in that he stated also that his son saw this report and asked him if he was going to die. That doctor needs to realize that television is public. Everyone can see it, even his family. Shame on her for doing that to his child. Especially when she said she was afraid he would die in office. That's putting a time frame on his life. A close one. His children do not need to be subjected to that. Dignity, this man is ridiculed daily about his weight and I for one think he handles it with dignity and self repect. I'm not sure about some other people on here (Andie), but if a grown adult says "Being slightly overweight probably has no bearing on heart disease and blood pressure and all of the other problems and diseases that affect fat people, but Christie is not slightly overweight. He is gargantuan! Even though I agree with many of his political views, I would never vote for someone who has such a lack of self respect and dignity." they are being an ignorant bully. Way to set an example for your children. The names are not necessary (fat and garganutuan). Hate is taught. It's nice to know that your children will be given a lesson on it.

I'm curious... for anyone who wouldn't vote for Christie because his weight is so "unhealthy"... did you vote for Obama, a smoker?

For that matter, did Mariano ever chime in on Obama's smoking?

I'm very sorry that I disgust you, @manders, but such morbid obesity shows a lack of self discipline. Not exactly what we want in the highest office in the land. And @eem, I never said, and would never say, that I hate Chris Christie, or anyone else for that matter, because of their outward appearance. And the doctor never said that he was definitely going to die in office, so don't put words in her mouth. She was expressing her concern that obese people have a much higher rate of morbidity, and she's correct. If he runs for the presidency and you vote for him, and you all choose to turn your head and ignore the fact that this man has anger management issues and is morbidly obese, you are putting our country at very grave risk. If he lost 100 pounds and managed to speak calmly and not blow his top so often, I would consider voting for him. If he wasn't so busy in his job, he'd be a great candidate for "The Biggest Loser."

Right, Andie, because ALL of the politicians that currently hold office set such stellar examples of self-discipline, self-respect, and dignity... and their vices won't lead them to an early grave (or have other, maybe worse, consequences).  You need to get your head out of the clouds if you think that you are making a great argument.

I'd like to think that our country was better able to elect leaders based on their viewpoints and beliefs than on their appearance... It's been said that if there had been media coverage like today, FDR would have never been elected because of his disability.  A person's ability to effectively discharge the duties of their job has no correlation to their weight, disability, skin color, gender, age, or sexual orientation.  Not hiring (or voting for) a person because they might die seems to be to be the epitome of discrimination.

This is about more than just appearances, manders. I have no doubt that Christie is a gifted politician, and as I said, I agree with most of his opinions. But how often do you see elderly, morbidly obese people? Almost never, because they don't live that long. I hope that he can overcome his weight problem but I know it's not easy, especially when you travel a lot and have a stressful job, like he does.

I am sure Chris Christie is aware of his weight and the consequences his weight will probably have on his health, just as most smokers know of the poison they are inhaling. And I am guessing Mr. Christie doesn't need Dr Mariono or Andie dictating his choices regarding his own personal and private matters.

@TruthTeller, regarding your comment on the first page, did you think that Christie's kids didn't realize that their dad was fat?
