All hail Betty White, Coolest Person Ever! Tonight is Betty White's Second Annual 90th Birthday Special, airing on NBC at 8 p.m., and the network released a snippet of her interview that just confirms what I have been thinking for a LONG time: I want to be Betty White when I grow up!
"Now that I'm 91, as opposed to being 90, I'm much wiser," Betty says with her trademark deadpan sense of humor. "I'm much more aware and I'm much sexier."
And how! I know she’s being funny, but just look at that beautiful woman! This birthday girl is a role model for how to live life to the absolute fullest, with a gleam in your eye, a healthy ability to poke fun at yourself, and a fabulous sense of humor.
In a society that worships youth, where it takes about five minutes for even the most ravishing Hollywood actress to go from leading lady to "the mom," and where young women are jumping on the Botox bandwagon before they even start getting wrinkles, it’s SO great to see an example of an OLD woman having what really appears to be the time of her life. And by old I mean old -- as in this woman has blown out a heck of a lot of birthday candles!
But of course, at heart, Betty is young and full of vitality ... which brings us to her other quote from the preview. In case you’re wondering, the best thing about being in your 90s, according to Betty, is that you're "spoiled rotten."
"Everybody spoils you like mad and they treat you with such respect because you're old. Little do they know, you haven't changed. You haven't changed in [the brain]. You're just 90 every place else," she says.
Hey Betty, at a little over a third of your age, I’m a mere whippersnapper (comparatively speaking!), but I know exactly what you mean. I still feel like I’m about 24 in my brain -- and it’s a shock sometimes to look in the mirror and see a grown-up mom looking back. The local high school kids seem to get younger every year, and I don’t think I’ll ever get used to being called ma’am. But maybe that’s the secret to a long, healthy life like Betty White’s: pay more attention to how old you feel in your heart than to the number of wrinkles you can count in the latest Facebook photo someone tagged you in. Just keep on doing what you love, finding the humor in everything, and, of course, if Betty White is your role model, keeping your supply of hot pink lipstick well stocked!
Happy second annual 90th, Betty White!
What would you say to the 91-year-old if you could give her a birthday wish?
