Brooke Burke Says She's Cancer-Free Just a Week After Surgery -- But Is She Really?

Wonder Woman 14

brooke burkeAfter a stressful and public battle with thyroid cancer, Brooke Burke was elated to announce today that though it's only been a week since the 41-year-old Dancing With the Stars host had surgery, she's "feeling pretty good." What's more, she's thoroughly cancer-free!

Reporting the news on her site,, Brooke explained, "I just got the results back from all of my tests and great news -- the thyroid cancer has been removed from my body and all my lymph nodes are clear. So I'm hoping that this is the end of the story. Woohoo!!! And thank GOD! My surgery went really well and recovery is much better than I expected it would be." Amazing! Geeze, that was fast, huh?

The explanation for the speedy results, according to Brooke:

While the presence of papillary cancer was confirmed in a small nodule, it was encapsulated (which means confined to a specific area) and all the surrounding tissue was clear.

She'll have follow-up testing in six months, but her doctors are optimistic that Brooke is cancer-free. The truth is that thyroid cancer can reoccur decades later, though it is most common within the first five years of the diagnosis. She'll have to have regular checkups, even if her cancer is in remission, and her doctor will need to monitor her hormone levels and will periodically repeat diagnostic tests like ultrasounds.

In the meantime, given how positive and focused Brooke has sounded throughout this whole ordeal, I'm sure she'll be taking every measure possible to stay healthy. She writes:

In a weird way, it's kind of the perfect ending to a very busy year. I've taken the rest of the year off to recover and catch up with my family and now we're just celebrating life.

Sounds perfect! Here's hoping it's truly all downhill for Brooke from here.

What do you think of Brooke's great news?

I have been told by an oncologist that the term "cancer free" is used after the patient hits the five year mark without recurrence. Until then, it's considered remission. Either way, I sure hope she really has beaten it.

That is great news.  Seems fast, but perhaps the surgery did do the job.
