'DWTS' Host Brooke Burke Has Thyroid Cancer: The Details on the Disease (VIDEO)

brooke burke-charvet thyroid cancerGlam, fit, married-to-David Charvet, Dancing With the Stars hosting goddess Brooke Burke reported some devastating news yesterday. After a routine physical this past summer revealed a nodule on her thyroid, Brooke had a biopsy, and her results "were atypical, which means that the doctor couldn’t confirm whether the nodule is cancerous or benign." After doing "a whole bunch of additional tests," including "an ultrasound and ... I had like seven needles stuck into my neck one day," it turned out she does, indeed, have thyroid cancer. So sad and scary, right?

Obviously, this was something the 41-year-old mom of four could have never seen coming. And yet, that's how it is for most patients, many of whom say they had never felt healthier when they were first diagnosed ...

Perhaps that's because the disease doesn't usually cause any signs or symptoms. But as it progresses it can lead to a lump that can be felt through the skin on your neck, changes to your voice, including increasing hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, pain in your neck and throat, or swollen lymph nodes in your neck. Experts point to exposure to radiation or genetic syndromes as risk factors, but unfortunately, sometimes, thyroid cancer just seems to come out of the blue

The good news is that it's pretty rare. More than 56,000 people (of all age groups, though people over 30 and women are more susceptible) are diagnosed with thyroid cancer each year in the U.S., according to the National Cancer Institute, and fewer than 1,800 Americans die from the disease annually. As Brooke ruefully notes in her announcement ...

Doctors say this is a good kind of cancer to have. Good cancer — that sounds so crazy! But my doctor did tell me that this is a happily-ever-after kind of thing.

Thank goodness! As for Brooke's next steps, she reveals ...

I need to have thyroid surgery and [thyroid removal], which means that I’m going to have a nice big scar right here across my neck. And I don’t get to walk around and pretend like nothing happened, or not follow up, or not share it because it’s going to be pretty much dead center [of my neck].

And because the thyroid makes hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight, Brooke will have to take thyroid hormone pills for the rest of her life.

The DWTS host's news is certainly nerve-wracking and upsetting. But Brooke has proven herself to be a strong, upbeat, take-charge woman. So, when she says she'll turn a negative into a positive and overcome this battle, there should be no question in our minds that she'll come out on top.
