Lady Gaga is not pregnant. She's not fat, either. Lady Gaga is, however, brave. In response to the recent nasty rumors and mean-spirited accusations regarding the singer's seemingly curvier frame, Lady Gaga took to her social networking website, LittleMonsters.com, and posted pictures of herself wearing just yellow underwear with the caption: "Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15."
And I give her a tremendous amount of credit. Because Gaga isn't just another celeb with a personal history of both anorexia AND bulimia (Demi Lovato has opened up about similar struggles, and some speculate the combined diseases to be the reason why LeAnn Rimes checked herself into rehab). Those pictures she posted today? They're not really about Lady Gaga. Those raw, honest images are an invitation to start what she's calling a Body Revolution.
Lady Gaga launched Body Revolution today as a section of LittleMonsters.com, featuring the following words as a sort of manifesto:
Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15.
But today I join the BODY REVOLUTION.
To Inspire Bravery.
and BREED some m$therf*cking COMPASSION
My mother and I created the BORN THIS WAY FOUNDATION for one reason: "To inspire bravery." This profile is an extension of that dream. Be brave and celebrate with us your "perceived flaws," as society tells us. May we make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous.
Judging by the response her page has gotten so far, Lady Gaga's mission is working. And it's almost impossible NOT to be inspired by the incredibly honest, raw testimonials and photos fans are sharing. Recovering anorexics and bulimics, cancer survivors showing scars for the very first time, a woman missing half her leg, a boy with a rare skin condition. I'm so grateful to Lady Gaga for creating a space where people aren't merely allowed, but invited, to stop hating their bodies.
And, not for nothing? Anybody who thinks Lady Gaga looks anything close to "fat" in her underwear has some serious issues.
