Remember When Gwyneth Paltrow Wasn’t the Crazy Health Nut We Know & Love?

Gwyneth PlatrowSometimes it takes a big scary life event to shake you from a bad habit. You know, one of those things you hope would never happen to you and then suddenly the world is crumbling around your feet? For Gwyneth Paltrow, it was when her father was diagnosed with cancer that she really changed the way she lived. Paltrow told People about how scared she was for her own health when learning her father's was compromised:

"This is my one life and I need to invest in myself and my family and make sure that we do what we can to stay healthy."

Considering how healthy we all view Ms. GOOP these days, it's hard to think of a time when Gwyneth wasn't on her fit A-game. Cancer is a scary thing, though, and this is a prime example of how it doesn't just affect those who have the disease.

My Uncle Alan died of lymphoma, I was too young to remember him. Today, I have a good friend who has survived the same disease. Looking at her, you'd never know. She's a strong, active young woman with an adoration for expensive jewelry and chardonnay. When we met, she told me she had recently overcome lymphoma and I was at a loss for words. Regularly when I see her, I smile and remember how important it is to value every day. It's those special people in your life, the ones who have had to deal with such crazy hardships, that make you pause and feel thankful for what it is you do have. It's those same people who make you reevaluate the decisions you make every day, and if they are the best ones for you.

Like I said, I know where Gwyneth's coming from, and can understand how it must have felt for her to lose her father. I want to take care of myself because I want to appreciate the life I have as healthy as I have it. The GOOP mom says that to this day she still gets emails from her mother saying how proud she is of her for turning her life into a healthier one. I know it's not the easiest thing to upkeep a super healthy lifestyle, especially for someone as busy as Gwyn. But shoot, sometimes you have to look at your priorities and realize that staying here to live as full of a life as possible -- well, that's number one.

Do you think Gwyneth's story is inspiring?
