Who could forget how, between 2004-2008, Britney Spears appeared to lose her damn mind? The general consensus of the situation was that her life had been micromanaged from the time she was a fetus, and a lot of the crazy was just Brit Brit's way of doing everything in her power to finally be able to call her own shots. But if that was true, then it completely backfired, because as we know, the pop star has now been under a conservatorship, which allows her dad and now fiance to make all major decisions for her, for four and a half years with no end in sight. And now, we may be learning why ...
According to TMZ, Brit has a "serious medical issue that prevents her from making consistently sound decisions." Eeek ... I had suspected this all along, but could it be that now there's actual proof?
Apparently, certain documents filed this week in the conservatorship case have been kept SUPER top-secret, because lawyers for the conservators say they could cause "irreparable harm and immediate danger" to Britney if they weren't sealed. Wow. I would venture to guess that they're talking about it damaging her career prospects.
TMZ goes on to report that "the singer has a disorder affecting her personality that can affect her state of mind." Oookay ... kind of a crappy explanation, but we get the gist. And given how the people around her are really going out of their way to keep the truth tucked away, I'm not sure we will ever get more specifics. But what we can only guess sure is sad and disturbing.
The good news is that whoever is blabbing about Britney's condition also says that she is doing "extremely well." She just needs the conservatorship as a "safety net." So who knows? Living under her father and fiance's thumb may be exactly what the one-time pop princess needs to stay well.
Are you surprised by this report about Britney's mental state? Do you think she's probably better off under the conservatorship?

And you wonder why people with Bipolar and other mental illnesses don't go get help. Narrow minded idiots like you say "eek!" when they found out.
Would you say "eek!" if she had diabetes, another chronic, lifelong illness that has to be managed?
STIGMA. It's alive and well here at The Stir.
I thought I heard a couple of years ago that she is bipolar. I know many of people who are bipolar and that does explain her behavior. I agree with Chrisa Hickey, I worked for a year on the suicide prevention hot line and probably 85% of the people calling weren't calling because they were suicidal but because they had a mental illness and just wanted to talk to someone. I wish everyone had a greater understand and more sympathy toward people who are fighting mental illnesses.
Wow TMZ! It must be true then!
I agree, it's not of our business, but just based upon her behavior, I also speculate that she probably has bipolar disorder, type 1, with manic highs and depressive lows. My ex was bipolar and had significant delusions when manic. At one point he believed that he had levitated while meditating and had communicated telepathically with the Dalai Lama. He also believe that he was sterile (we have a son, so he is obviously not, but I digress), and told our neighbor that she shouldn't think negative thoughts because the government could read them with helicopters. It was terribly frightening for both of us. He ended up getting arrested beause of his behavior one night, and at the police station kept repeating "I'm not crazy! I'm not crazy!". I feel awful for him. I'm glad Britney has a family who is able to care of her in such a way that she can live a normal life. Some people with bipolar disorder are able to simply take medication, or participate in therapy, and lead normal lives. Others, however, need more care and some may even need to be placed in long term care facilities.
