Michael Phelps’ 12,000 Calorie Diet Is Totally Normal (VIDEO)

Michael Phelps dietThe 2012 Summer Olympics have finally arrived in London (and on my TV!) and oh em gee do I have the fevah. I'm already working on putting together my own party for the Opening Ceremony tomorrow night (it airs at 7 p.m. on NBC). You know what I'm the most excited for, though? Watching Michael Phelps tear up the competition in that 50-meter pool.

One would assume that a guy that swims with that sorta finesse (and looks handsome as hell doing it) needs a lot of fuel, right? Well what if I were to tell you that like many other Olympians, Phelps consumes 12,000 calories/day. Yes, you read that right. Twelve. Thousand. A little background information: the average person needs (and I'll use that term loosely) 1,600 calories a day.

Holy schnikes.

Think about what would happen if he didn't eat that much, though. He'd be a mess. He'd be so energy deficient that he'd be in a hospital bed. There's NO way he'd be able to swim as well as he does! Those abs wouldn't look as perfectly ... perfect.

Sigh. This is just an interesting example that it's not how much you eat, but how it works into your lifestyle that matters. If you're a person who sits at a desk all day and then goes home and does the same on your plush couch, then you may not necessarily be able to consume as much as someone who's crazy active. It is what it is, I suppose. But if you get active -- you'll be able to enjoy a lot more. Heck, who wants to go for a little runski?

Ch-ch-check Phelps out below, and learn even more about his carazay eating habits:

Can you even imagine what it's like to eat 12,000 calories a day? What would you chow down on?
