Admit it: For most of your 20s, you sort of blew off a proper skin care routine. I'll be the first to confess that currently, at 28, I don't really do much other than cleanse and occasionally moisturize. Sometimes, I'm downright negligent. Like on the beach a couple of weeks ago when I didn't even think about putting on sunscreen and ended up totally toasted and begging for mercy! Major mistake. I realized then -- as most of us realize at some point -- there comes a time when you just can't fool around anymore. You gotta get serious about your skin care!
On a recent episode of CafeMom Studios' The Sarah James Show, the parenting and style blogger sat down with Dr. Dina Strachan, a board certified dermatologist and mom of a 6-year-old girl, and the two explored habits and products we can adopt to keep our skin healthy ...
We've heard it all before, but Dr. Strachan agreed that "sunscreen is the most important thing you can do for skin health and beauty." She emphasized that we should be "using it every single day." Addressing a lot of the confusion out there about what kind we ought to be using, she recommends a sunscreen that is at least 30+ SPF with UVA/UVB protection, and if you work in an office, applying just once a day is fine. (But if you're outside, of course, reapplication is likely necessary!)
She also discussed what the ultimate nighttime skincare routine should look like. A gentle cleanser and moisturizer are just the tip of the iceberg. Dr. Strachan says recommends a product with a retinoid -- which will treat and prevent sun-related aging by stimulating collagen production in the skin -- and/or salicylic acid or glycolic acid which do the same and also prevent acne.
With so much info at our fingertips when it comes to taking care of our skin, it's interesting to hear what an expert has to say about the basics. It bears noting, though, that not all women's skin is created equal ... So mixing and matching and finding the products and active ingredients that work best for you is a huge part of figuring out how to care for your skin.
