Teen Mom's Leah Messer, mom to twin girls Aleeah and Aliannah, has come clean about her dirty, not-so-little secret. She confessed to her Twitter followers earlier today: "I really wanna quit smoking! .. It's such a bad example for my girls #itsanewday to change anything and everything! #aliandaleeah #JLC" Whaaa? Who knew she smoked in the first place? Lots of fans seemed shocked to hear it.
That may be because while she's been a smoker for some time, MTV has never shown her indulging in the nasty vice on the show, and she says she didn't smoke during her pregnancy and reportedly doesn't do it around her twins. But paparazzi have caught her mid-ciggie (see: photographic proof to the left), so yep -- it's clearly a habit she could stand to kick! If not only because she'll be better off health-wise, but also because, if she doesn't, she's hurting her loved ones.
As the daughter of two middle-aged life-long smokers, I'll admit I don't have much sympathy for those who cling to their death sticks. It nauseates me, and I can't wrap my head around the idea of anyone thinking it's okay to keep spending their hard-earned dough on something deadly that also makes them a social pariah! And yeah, I guess I could say "to each their own!" and have the attitude of "live and let live," but not when it comes to smoking.

That's because not only are smokers like Leah and my parents setting a poor example for their kids, they're hurting them directly and indirectly. Second-hand smoke isn't a joke. Even if smokers find a way to avoid puffing around their loved ones, they're still wreaking like it and ultimately, chipping away at their livelihood, which hurts anyone who cares about them.
Thankfully, Leah seems to understand this and realize that by continuing to smoke, she isn't just hurting herself. But by resolving to quit, she's making an admirable, selfless move. Other smokers could stand to follow her lead.
What do you think about Leah Messer's commitment to quit smoking? Do you agree it's a selfish habit?

It is the most disgusting habit and exactly how many studies do you need to prove that it harms your kids? This site is full of articles of "I would die for my kids" but giving them asthma, allergies and possibly cancer is okay?
Anyone who has kids and smokes is selfish. Period. But for a smoker, there's always a pathetic "but...but..but....."
Never did I think that someone smoking was cause to write a flippin article. I mean don't you have better things to write about? Someone smokes alert the freakin media. I don't care if she's famous she's only human. There are a lot worse things out there than smoking cigarettes, like drugs. Fast food and unhealty eating habits kill people too so why don't you take a picture of a person eating a hamburger or drinking a soft drink and talk about how bad that is? I mean really yeah smoking is bad but it's not like she's doing it around her babies. I just really don't think that a person smoking cigarettes is worthy of writing about, or caring about to be honest. She smokes, it's bad we get it,move on!
And I have kids and smoke, you really sit there and say i am selfish? I NEVER smoke in the house or near my kids, and I sacrifice everything for my children. I make sure they are well taken care of. I don't buy smokes unless I have the money for it. I have always gone without for my children if need be. Seriously Just because you smoke does not make you a bad person and of course you would have to be ignorant to think it does. People have been smoking for many many years are they all selfish people? NO! So why be that judgmental about it. And as for the pathetic comment, I make no excuse as to why I smoke. I have my own personal reasons and I stand by them. It's bad for my health, but so is junk food, so do I have the right to say that your a selfish pig if you eat a greasy hamburger? Get real! Before you judge walk a mile in someone else's shoes, I bet your not perfect either!
Considering the nasty habits many people have and do not get an article written on them... C'mon. Does it really hurt me if she smokes? No. I think smoking is BAD but it is NOT wrong. Also, she isn't a teenager. She was 18 when 16 and Pregnant started (her episode aired April 6, 2010), her birthday is April 4, 1992. I'm only a year older than her.
I look crummy without make up as well! She is constantly wearing make up, and this is what she looks like without it. Worry about yourself is what I think. I have faults too, mine just aren't in public view. So do you!
It's quite easy to pick up smoking if you have the money for it and you don't have good coping skills or a lot of support in your life.
Take for example, my husband left me six years ago. He went to the length of bringing home his "girlfriend" and having sex in the living room behind me while I worked on something. Naturally I threw a fit and eventually took my daughter and went back home to my mom. I thought my weight had something to do with his infedelity so I changed my ways and I started to lose weight very quickly. Now I'm going to echo the sentiment that weight loss doesn't change anything because I still hated on myself constantly. Even worse when I hit a huge plateau in my weight loss I couldn't stand how hard it was and I started smoking. BAM! Plateau gone.
Even worse than that when I hit my final plateau I started purging my food. I rationalized to myself that if I can make it to 50 or even the late 40's that I didn't care. My daughter would be an adult by then.
I still struggle with bulimia today, but I have quit smoking. After a suicide attempt people kind of pushed me into the proper channels so that I could deal with my life better.
