You don't have to tell any bride-to-be (ahem) that weddings -- let alone your dream wedding -- cost waaaay too much these days. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to cut corners and squeeze your ultimate Big Day into a smaller budget, but uh -- faking cancer? Definitely not the way to go.
But in order to score her $1,200 wedding dress, photos, and honeymoon, among other pricey items gratis for her May 2010 nuptials, a 25-year-old woman from New York named Jessica Vega lied about having leukemia and less than a year to live. She pulled the wool over tons of vendors and even -- get this -- her groom's eyes! Talk about sick.
Being held on $10,000 bail, Vega was indicted with grand larceny and scheme to defraud. She also faces a misdemeanor count on possessing a forged document -- the doctor's "diagnosis" of her disease.
Reminds me of another situation that played out not that long ago, wherein a 42-year-old woman from Virginia named Martha Ann Nicholas claimed to have had cancer, but in reality, she was coping with what seemed to be mental illness. But what Vega has done seems even worse. She may also be mentally ill -- that's what her ex-husband Michael O'Connell (yep, they're now divorced) says.
But it's not like she was ever raising funds for cancer research or charities like Nicholas. It sounds like her fake cancer was always a scheme to pay for her dream wedding. It's just so sad that she took so many people -- including someone she married!! -- for such a crazy ride.
Honestly, I have to wonder ... who in their right mind would fake cancer? She must need mental health treatment. Whether or not that comes before, after, or during jail time -- we'll just have to wait and see.
Can you believe this story?! How do you think Vega should be punished?
