Bride Who Faked Cancer in Wedding Scam Shouldn't Just Go to Jail

bride hiding bouquet behind her backYou don't have to tell any bride-to-be (ahem) that weddings -- let alone your dream wedding -- cost waaaay too much these days. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to cut corners and squeeze your ultimate Big Day into a smaller budget, but uh -- faking cancer? Definitely not the way to go.

But in order to score her $1,200 wedding dress, photos, and honeymoon, among other pricey items gratis for her May 2010 nuptials, a 25-year-old woman from New York named Jessica Vega lied about having leukemia and less than a year to live. She pulled the wool over tons of vendors and even -- get this -- her groom's eyes! Talk about sick.

Being held on $10,000 bail, Vega was indicted with grand larceny and scheme to defraud. She also faces a misdemeanor count on possessing a forged document -- the doctor's "diagnosis" of her disease.

Reminds me of another situation that played out not that long ago, wherein a 42-year-old woman from Virginia named Martha Ann Nicholas claimed to have had cancer, but in reality, she was coping with what seemed to be mental illness. But what Vega has done seems even worse. She may also be mentally ill -- that's what her ex-husband Michael O'Connell (yep, they're now divorced) says.

But it's not like she was ever raising funds for cancer research or charities like Nicholas. It sounds like her fake cancer was always a scheme to pay for her dream wedding. It's just so sad that she took so many people -- including someone she married!! -- for such a crazy ride.

Honestly, I have to wonder ... who in their right mind would fake cancer? She must need mental health treatment. Whether or not that comes before, after, or during jail time -- we'll just have to wait and see.

Can you believe this story?! How do you think Vega should be punished?

cancer, weddings

As a Stage IV Breast Cancer Patient who's been battling 14 years, I consider her to be the lowest of the low.

Not to mention that if she were sentenced to prison, the public would still be comping for her room and board and food.  It is EXPENSIVE to hold a prisoner.  I certainly want her punished, but not in a way that forces us to pay for her living again.

Vega should be forced to pay back all that she took and it should be donated to a cancer research charity.

As someone who survived Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (TWICE, I might add) and went through a clinical trial of chemo, I'd like to rip her hair out by the handful and cram my finger down her throat over and over and over so she can experience some of the side effects of chemo.  Then, give her a scathing case of heartburn that never subsides for two months because of the radiation treatments.

My sister in law told my whole family that she had cancer while she was pregnant and that she might die after the baby is born. My brother married her because he wanted to be there for her and now they are getting a divorce. She lied to him and cheated on him she is a low life just like the chick in this post.
