Listen up, people, Miley Cyrus does not have an eating disorder. Sweet niblets! According to a recent tweet from the 19-year-old starlet, she's not starving herself to be skinny:
"For everyone calling me anorexic I have a gluten and lactose allergy. It's not about weight it's about health. Gluten is crapppp anyway!"
She even tweeted a photo of herself with a bag of fast food, inhaling deeply:
"I can't eat it, so I'm just gonna smell the s--- out of it! My mouth is LITERALLY watering."
Okay, I have a little bit of experience with this topic. When I was around Miley's age (hmm, weird coincidence), I was also diagnosed with a "gluten and lactose allergy," which required me to follow the same strict dietary guidelines. And guess what I figured out, fast?
You get pretty damn skinny when you cut all foods containing wheat, barley, rye, and dairy out of your diet. (That's including, but not limited to: most breads, cakes, pies, candies, cereals, cookies, crackers, pastas, sauces [including soy sauce] seasoned snack foods like potato and tortilla chips, pizza, ice cream, yogurt, cheese, and butter.)
Basically, if it's not an apple or doesn't have a label on it that says "gluten-free," you can't eat it. Of course you're going to lose weight -- there are about five foods left that are safe to consume!
Here's the thing: Celiac disease (which causes gluten intolerance) and dairy allergies are absolutely real. But the fact is, lots of girls are using the gluten-free thing as a way to hide eating disorders -- and why not? It's the perfect cover for an anorexic:
"Why don't you ever order anything besides salad?"
"Oh, it's just this crazy gluten-free diet the doctor put me on. Believe me, I'd love to get the rigatoni."
"Whoa, you look like you lost a little too much weight."
"I know, I just can't keep any weight on because of this crazy gluten-free diet."
I'm not saying this is definitely what Miley Cyrus is doing, but I am kind of concerned about how her announcement will validate the disordered eating of young, impressionable fans.
Do you or did you ever know someone with an eating disorder? What kinds of excuses did they give for their behavior?

it's very possiable she does have troubles with gluten... I stay away from eating or feeding my family things with gluten as best as I can.
My mother in law is nearly 70 and she recently self diagnosed herself with a gluten allergy. She does crazy stuff like that just to get attention. I have to wonder how many other people, like Miley, have done the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I know that Celiac is a very real and serious disease and many people have it. However, there seems to be a spike in the last year or two of people who suddenly claim to have it.
Celiac is a real disease but there is a certain group of people who claim gluten intolerance without any confirmation from a doctor. Whether or not they use that to disguise an eating disorder, who knows? What I can tell you is that having people call you anorexic (whether it is true or not) and talk about your weight constantly doesn't help anyone. It's the worst kind of gossip and it doesn't do anything but harm people.
Justme hit the nail on the head.
That excuse wouldn't go very far as a child's parents would know the medical history and would know that the kid doesn't have the gluten allergy, and if the parent thinks the kid might, then they can go get it properly diagnosed.
All humans have an intolerance to gluten, refined sugar, and dairy. We weren't made to digest those foods let alone in the amounts we typically consume them.
