Jennifer Lawrence's 'Hunger Games' Diet Sounds Harsh (VIDEO)

jennifer lawrence hunger gamesAs long as you haven't been living under a rock, you know that Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence is on the brink of becoming a megastar. So it's no surprise that every move she makes is being documented by the press this early on. One of the latest stories to make its way to the web is on the intense workout and diet regimen she followed to "shape up" for shooting the film.

Now, let's step back and consider this whole idea of a beautiful, fit actress having to "shape up." Jennifer was in perfect shape prior to shooting Hunger Games. Even her trainer, Joe Horrigan, admitted that she "looked good," but ... he and the film's director, Gary Ross, concluded that because she was playing Katniss -- a young woman who is hunting on a daily basis for her meals -- she should look "leaner."

I can understand where they were coming from, to some extent. It's admirable to want to stay true to the novel. I also appreciate that they made a point not to make her so thin that she appeared "gaunt" -- again, because Katniss was able to eat for the most part throughout the first book.

More good news: While definitely regimented, it doesn't sound like the diet Jennifer had to adhere to was "fanatic." For instance, it wasn't obscenely low in carbs -- something that while popular can be extremely detrimental to stable blood sugar and, in turn, performance. As Horrigan noted:

She had to have enough carbs to train. If you put her on too low of carb diet then she wouldn’t have the energy and would affect her ability to perform.

Glad he noted that! Plus, thankfully, it sounds like Jennifer was able to deal with the regimen without it really taking too much of a toll on her. It also helped that she dieted before they started filming, then just "maintained."

Still, all this said, hearing that a young woman who was already healthy was being told to slash calories and get "lighter" is worrisome. No wonder working in Hollywood gives performers eating disorders! I'm sure this was by no means the most extreme lead-up to a role for a young actress, but it definitely is a glimpse at what they are told to do for work on a regular basis. Judging from this, there's a very fine line between what's rigorous yet healthy and what's straight-up troublesome.

Here's more on the cast's workout and diet regimen, and there's even footage of Jennifer in action while training!
