The Secret to Skinny: It's in the Bedroom

bedAlmost as much as I enjoy eating, I love sleeping. Oh dear, sweet, blissful sleep, how I love your unconscious, drooling ways! I will sacrifice just about anything -- including, most days, my morning workout -- to make sure I get my full eight hours. And now there's another great excuse reason for me to demand all that sleep: It keeps you skinny. Fist pump! Boo-yah, SLEEP.

Gotta love those scientists. They're always studying sleep. And the latest study shows that people who don't sleep enough eat more, move less, and gain weight. Yipes! Sleep-deprived parents, are you worried about this?

For this study, researchers found that sleep-deprived people tend to eat an average of 549 more calories per day. This reminds me of my college days, when I would justify last night studying snacks because if you stay up all night, you need midnight dinner, right? Well, apparently your body is not burning off those calories just because you're awake. So that's a bummer.

This is not the first time sleep has been linked to weight. Another study linked sleeping to childhood obesity. The study focused on children ages 3 to 5, and then followed up with the kids when they were around 7. The researchers concluded that "young children who do not get enough sleep are at increased risk of becoming overweight." And yet another study shows that teens who get enough sleep tend to be slimmer, as well.

So how about that. Sleep and weight are linked together throughout our lives! Which brings me back to the typical sleep-deprived parents. What's a sleepy mom going to do?
