Let's cut to the chase: Any form of bladder and vajayjay infection is the absolute worst, right? Even just your random, run-of-the-mill urinary tract infection (UTI) is a total pain -- literally. In fact, they can cause excruciating pain that has you wondering how the hell you got cursed with the "honeymoon cystitis" (great spin, huh? Making it sound real cute! Ha!). Well, don't necessarily chalk it up to lots of rollin' around in the hay. That UTI may have more to do with what you're chowing down on ... as in, chicken. Yum!!
A new report in the March issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases links the E. coli that causes UTIs to E. coli from chicken. Apparently, the infections probably came directly from the chickens, not from contamination during food processing. However, that doesn't mean we humans aren't at fault.
The researchers point the finger at "improper and overuse of antimicrobials during animal food production." As in inappropriate use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and food production.
You know how your package of chicken breasts says, "No antibiotics added"? That doesn't mean that the chicken was never given antibiotics at any point in its life cycle. It just means that sufficient documentation was provided by the poultry producer to the USDA demonstrating that the animals were raised without antibiotics. In other words, there's a sketch factor, and this news is proof that it's causing real health problems!
How scary is it that we have to worry about contracting drug-resistant bugs because of the meat we're eating? It's enough to make you want to go vegan. (Okay, maybe not that far ... vegetarian?) Whether you're willing to shift your lifestyle is a whole different ballgame, but you've got to wonder whether there's really enough regulation of our food for us to feel safe eating it. I personally have been trying to cut back on chicken -- and I only buy organic -- but this news is still a major turn-off.
I guess the best we can do is remember to be personally responsible, aware, and educated about the food we eat and how it might affect our health. Knowledge is power, and in this case, power is not ending up with a nasty bug that won't quit!
Does this skeeve you out about eating chicken? What precautions do you take with food to protect your health?

The FDA obviously isn't going to protect us.
organic and free range.. properly treated and handled food tastes better and is better for you whether it is plant or animal. I prefer to be able to pronounce and understand all of the ingredients in my food..
a chalupa for example is not food.
Brittany I totaly agree its hard. i just wanted to let you know about bountiful baskets it a co op that helps buying veggies way cheap. you get more than a weeks worth for $15. I don't know where you live but here is their website http://bountifulbaskets.org/ and if they are not in your area look around co-ops like this are everywhere. It helps my family of 7 a lot ... I hope it helps you too.
Kwiat2, That's just not reasonable for you to attack people. not everyone can afford to budget eating organically. For many Americans its buy whats affordable or don't eat . When you add kids to the mix not eating is not an option. If you know a better way offer solutions not judgement. :)
Karin Maaka, how do you do it? I could use some tips :) I have a family of 7 and have a budget as well as food restrictions that make it tough.
oddly enough organic chicken and regular chicken are about the same, sadly that cant be said for most organic food. I can't afford to eat organic seeing as we live off of food stamps and wic in my house (and wic does not cover organic food at all) and quiet frankly you can call it an excuse but the fact of the matter is when you live off of ramen noodles and what ever else is dirt cheap. store brand mac and cheese is roughly 50 cents here, vs a box of annies organic mac and cheese which is atleast a couple dollars, kids have to eat what are you gonna do let cps take away your kids because you had to have organic and ran out of money for food 2 weeks into the month or let your kid deal with cheaperd stuff and be happy and full?
wow i messed that comment up bad, i interupted my own thought so lemme finish.... fact of the matter is if you live a ramen diet its not a choice, its eat the crap filled with lord knows what or starve
