Linda Burger, 56, speaks out against Susan G. KomenAll week now, a war has raged on between the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood. Komen keeps changing their story for the split, people on both sides of the issue have railed out on the organizations' respective Facebook pages, and many local Komen affiliates have responded by opposing the decision and stating that they aim to continuing to fund their local Planned Parenthoods. Nonetheless, a different kind of backlash is taking place among disenchanted breast cancer patients ... like Linda Burger, a 56-year-old woman who resides in Las Vegas, NV and is currently battling the disease.
She says she felt compelled to make a response video called "What Breast Cancer is, and Is Not!" Burger tells The Stir exclusively, "I just felt the strong desire to make it, like something was telling me I had to. I don't usually get up on a soapbox, but in this case, it just seemed like the right thing to do."
Thank goodness she did, because her video puts a name, scars, and a seriously bold voice to the issue. It's a wake-up call.
More from The Stir: Kudos to Susan G. Komen for Defunding Planned Parenthood
As you'll see, Linda warns you not to watch the entire video if you're squeamish, but I'll give you the heads-up: At one point, she shows the scars from her mastectomy, and while it isn't "pretty," it is important to see. And it could make you cry. (I did.) But we don't have to cry for her, because Linda herself has become fearless in the face of cancer. And so she didn't hold back from expressing what many breast cancer patients and survivors are thinking right now.
Check her out ...
What a seriously amazing, brave, awesome woman. Really puts a whole new spin on this mess, huh? Her take just goes to show ... This isn't even a war that should have been waged in the first place. How could the fact that red vs. blue values and religion have seemingly infiltrated an organization founded to unconditionally fight breast cancer not blow the minds of those who stood with, walked with, and have supported Komen for the past 30 years?? We thought cancer knew no politics. While shock and dismay may have been the initial reaction, looking at it through Linda's eyes, you realize the decision and the organization's current behavior isn't just outrageous ... It's terribly regretful.
Linda explained, "The Susan G. Komen Foundation has done so many good things for research, for women and men and everyone, well, that's why this makes me so very sad."
It is sad, but that doesn't mean that breast cancer survivors don't have anyone else to turn to. Thankfully, there are many organizations stepping up to the plate. Planned Parenthood itself has started a Breast Health Fund, to help Planned Parenthood health centers provide breast health education, screenings, and referrals for mammograms to women in need.
So, there is definitely still hope. Thanks, Linda, for showing us that it's particularly in the face of adversity that we should be frank, say what we feel, and fight the world.

What an INCREDIBLE woman. Kudos to her for speaking out and I'm sure this video will touch MANY. Best of luck to you!
I'm not sure why there is so much controversy over this. Komen does cancer. PP does abortions and some other token stuff to keep their federal gravy coming.
Why should it be expected for Komen to fund Planned Parenthood? Komen could open their own clinics. They could give grants to hospitals or other medical facilities. WHY does it have to be tied to an organization like planned parenthood?
All of these orgs are about politics, money (funding), and fraud. There are safe, non-invasive cancer treatments. These orgs, big pharma, and the government keep this stuff hidden so they can continue to profit. People are sick and dying, and all these assholes care about is money. Chemo and radiation KILL people. Birth control and abortion increase your risk of breast cancer. So does smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy. Breastfeeding, eating healthy, and exercising all reduce your risk. Mammograms expose your breasts to radiation. How does that reduce your risk? These are the things people NEED to know. I don't support ANY of these organizations. They are ALL corrupt.
Good on her!!! I don't get why people are so against Planned Parenthood. PP isn't just about birth control... it does so many other things inclusing cancer screenings. By losing funding, women who wouldn't normally be able to afford these screenings are losing the ability to get them. So why shouldn't Komen support a group that helps screen women for breast and other cancers? Politics and religion have no business here.
Susan G. Komen cut funding to Planned Parenthood because they no longer give grants to organzations that are under congressional investigation. The people who say it is due to politics or religion are saying this for their own reasons. On another note.....Planned Parenthood does NOT offer mammograms at any of thier clinics of facilities across the US. All they do are hands-on exams. Women (and men) should be doing self breast exams at home every single month! Why should Susan G Komen give them over $600,000 per year to do something that women should be doing at home, each month, themselves, for FREE!!!!! Planned Parenthood does NOT pay for mammograms, biopsies, chemotherapy, radiation, or anything else related to breast cancer!!! They will show you how to do a self breast exam but that is something that anyone can learn via books or the internet.
I love this absolutely love it! She speaks the truth! I'd give her a big hug if I could! I myself just had both my breast removed while pregnant. Tell them hun tell them!
Pteromandias, you are mistaken. 3% of PP's work is abortions. 97% is contraceptives, STD treatment (for men and women) and women's health.
Komen chose to unfund PP because for political purposes. They are putting politics before cancer care and that is why we are outraged.
SGK. We are brave too. But I guess we aren't because you disagree with us. Guess you guys got your wish, breaking news SGK is going to continue to donate to PP.

ASouza77 you are very naive.
Actually Billsfan that is not true, they are going to honor the current grants but evaluate any further grants in the future.
