NBC's Andrea Mitchell Is Fighting Breast Cancer

andrea mitchellOur thoughts and prayers are with NBC reporter Andrea Mitchell, who announced at the end of her show Wednesday that she has breast cancer. Of course, if anyone can beat cancer, it would have to be Mitchell, who broke the bad news to her audience with characteristic optimism and practicality. She even seized the opportunity to sneak in a little reporting!

The 64-year-old chief foreign affairs correspondent for NBC says her prognosis is "terrific," as the cancer is still in its early stages (apparently it was detected at a routine screening).

"I am now among the one in eight women in this country -- remarkably, one in eight -- who have had breast cancer," she said, following up this bit of info with the following advice:

"For you women out there and the men who love you, screening matters," she said. "Do it. This disease can be completely curable if you find it at the right time."

Though Mitchell signed off with the words, "I'll see all of you tomorrow," there are no details yet as to whether or not her treatment will force Mitchell to take a break from filming her show Andrea Mitchell Reports.

Still, even if Mitchell needs to temporarily stop reporting, I have little doubt that she'll spend her time "off" working to raise breast cancer awareness. Mitchell is a trailblazer, one of the first female journalists to defy gender expectations. Fidel Castro gave the woman unprecedented access! I kind of get the impression that she'd go absolutely nuts if she had to stay in bed for longer than a few hours at a time.

Do you think Andrea Mitchell will become an anti-breast cancer crusader?
