5 Easy Ways to Get Flat Abs This Fall

woman working outGenerally, fall is a time to put on that snuggling weight. You know what I mean, right? Those extra few pounds around the middle that we all say are to "keep us warmer," but are actually because we're not as active, we eat more, and we can easily hide behind those loosely-fitting fall clothes and big comfy sweaters. But this time, instead of getting cozy as the temperatures get cooler, I'm trying to find a six-pack under all these layers somewhere leading up to my Las Vegas vacation at the end of the month.

When you think about it, fall is actually the perfect time to get out and get active. Cooler temperatures mean less of that hot-sticky-over-sweating feeling. And humidity? Shmumidity! Here are 5 easy ways to get flat abs this fall:

1. Hiking. There's no better time to hit the local trails than when the leaves are changing colors. Enjoy the beautiful fall scenery while getting in some cardio, and don't forget to snap a few photos along the way.

2. Get a little nutty. Studies show that nuts are a super powerful belly flattener because they contain monounsaturated fatty acids. Swap out your midday chocolate binge for a handful of cashews or almonds, and you'll see the results.

3. Side bends for the love handles. Ugh. Just hearing the phrase "love handles" sends chills up my spine. I think it's safe to say that just about any woman in the universe would agree: Love handles and the muffin tops they produce are wretched. Shape magazine suggests doing side bends to battle the bulge. Start by standing up straight with one dumbbell in each hand, then lean to one side and contract. Do that 15 times to one side, rest for 15 seconds, and then do it 15 times on the other. Repeat 4 times.

4. Running. I've run a handful of half-marathons in October, and I can definitely attest to the fact that it's the best time of year to hit the streets. Running works muscles all over your body, including your abs. Make your stride more enjoyable with a great playlist and good company.

5. Chew properly. It seems natural, the whole eating process, doesn't it? But rushing through a meal could actually prevent you from slimming down. According to ABC News, if we don't chew properly, then the body can't break down the nutritional properties in our food, which are needed to metabolize proteins, carbs, and fat. Looks like I'm gonna start counting to 20 again before swallowing like I did when I was little!

What are your tricks for staying in shape all year long?
