The Surprising Way 'Glee' Star Lea Michele Gets in Shape

lea micheleActress Lea Michele is just as about as petite as they come. I couldn't believe how pint-sized she was when I saw her in person at Tiffany's in New York City, shooting the Glee finale last season. Since her stint as Rachel Berry began, the 25-year-old has lost 10 pounds and toned up using what she calls "the Glee workout."

Wait, I already love Glee. So I'm totally going to love the Glee workout, right?

Maybe not.

Lea says it consists of high-octane dance routines, a vegan diet, and one other secret weapon: vitamin injections.


A common side effect of being a vegan is that your body lacks the essential vitamins and nutrients you'd normally get from meat and eggs. Which is why Lea says she opts for regular injections of vitamin B12. Aside from giving her that added nutrient boost, the shots can supposedly speed up weight loss because they boost metabolism and increase energy levels. 

Ahhhh, so that's why Rachel's always got that extra pep in her step! And it's not just Lea Michele. A lot of the stars are doing it! Katy Perry, Madonna, and Justin Timberlake are said to be among them. Lea says she's getting the injections to stay healthy, not to shed pounds quickly. Guess she doesn't want to start up those eating disorder rumors again.

No matter what the reason for the shots, admittedly if Lea didn't get them, she could be in a bit of trouble since she's a vegan. The vitamin plays a key role in brain function, the formation of blood, and the metabolism of every single cell in the human body. Sounds like it's an injection that's pretty warranted in her case, no?

As someone who's kind of scared of needles, the whole idea of vitamin injections makes me nervous. I had a cortisone shot just last week and had to cover my eyes and sing a little diddy to distract myself from what was actually happening in front of me.

Personally, I opt for things like salmon and eggs to get in my recommended dose of B12, so you won't see me going to get vitamin injections or becoming a vegan. But I am totally into the whole dancing part of the Glee get-fit routine. Who's down for a little rumba?
