Migraines Don't Mean Michele Bachmann Is Incompetent

michele bachmann migraineGOP presidential nominee hopeful Michele Bachmann is not someone I ever, ever thought I might defend. But the latest gossip designed to discredit her run for the nation's highest office is really a low blow. Unnamed sources are reporting that Bachmann suffers from debilitating migraines that are so dramatic, she is "incapacitated" and dependent on "all sorts of pills." The idea being that such a serious health condition will knock this little lady out even as she's sitting there with her hand on the button.

Hogwash. Ridiculous, dirty, sexist hogwash. Why didn't they just trot out that old "when she has her period, she won't be able to think clearly!" line?! Bachmann herself has released a statement that migraines have not, and will not, impede her ability to do the job at hand. But how about I just jump in there and give the Tea Party darling a hand and talk about why a migraine is not a health condition that affects your ability to run the free world.

I've battled migraines throughout my adult life and have been debilitated at times. I remember when I was working for a non-profit and my migraine was so severe, I went to lie down in a living room next to the office. I lost about an hour of work that day, but it was a non-profit theater company. If I had been needed on an important phone call to, say, the head of the CIA, you can bet I could have sat up and done my job. But sending a fundraising email could wait, with no life-altering result on the citizens of my country. Migraines suck. They're painful, and all you want to do is lie in a dark room and be as still as possible. But they can be overcome when your job is to run the nation. Easily.

Additionally, we have a history of presidents with health problems, including FDR and John F. Kennedy. No one would argue that their health issues made these renowned leaders unable to do their jobs. President Reagan was shot and returned to office, and later had the beginnings of Alzheimer's. Migraines are like a dust allergy compared to the afflictions these men battled.

So let's focus on Bachmann's divisive politics, her hate-filled attitudes about anyone different than her, and her other disqualifications for the office of President of the United States of America. Leave her "lady problems" out of it.

Do you think migraines inhibit someone's ability to be President?
