If you’re as celeb-obsessed as I am, any time one of them is “rushed to the hospital” (as if anyone ever “takes their sweet-ass time” going to the hospital), you suddenly turn into House. Hmm, so yesterday he was on that yacht all day with that actress drinking Champagne ... heat exhaustion! Alcohol poisoning! Mono!
So when Selena Gomez found herself in one of those paper white gowns recently, the medical diagnoses started swirling in my head. Food poisoning? The flu? Bieber Fever? (Sorry, I had to.) Turns out, the culprit was ...
Junk food! “I do eat,” she told a radio host. “The problem is I don’t eat right. I love everything that’s possibly not good for me ... I love M&Ms, Kit Kats, Snickers, and Goobers at the movies.” She added that growing up she was allowed to eat whatever she wanted and that anything ‘healthy’ would get bad stuff like cheese poured all over it.
Now, I’m not gonna say my mom was strict when it came to making sure I got all the proper servings of all the food groups. I ate a lot of grilled cheese. And French fries. And Pillsbury Toaster Strudel. But I also wasn’t doing Letterman, singing in front of thousands, and jetsetting with the Biebs. A growing girl needs her nutrients, but bad eating habits are hard to break.
Selena credited her mom for getting her to eat healthier and “shoving vitamins down my mouth,” but is that enough? Shouldn’t she be telling her young daughter’s manager to maybe schedule one less appearance? Or, heck, even taking an entire day off to re-charge? Get that girl a hearty meal and 8 hours of sleep -- or at least a protein shake and a power nap.
I’ve never heard of someone being hospitalized for od-ing on Goobers. And I know people who function just fine on KFC Double Downs and Big Gulps. But then again, they aren’t working 12-hour days in which they have to be ‘on’ every second. That’s a lot for anyone to handle, especially a young woman with nothing but a chocolate bar and a whole lot of expectations.
Do you think Selena's mom should have kept a better eye on her daughter's health?

She's not a child anymore. Legally, she's an adult and can make her own decisions. If she were a normal young adult, she'd be in college probably doing all the same unhealthy eating habits she's doing now, with some beer pong thrown in for good measure. In college, I had a hectic schedule and barely had time to grab a candy bar, let alone sit down for a meal. And several of my classmates were the same way. Does that mean our parents should have driven down and regulated our diets? No. It was our own faults for not making time for meals. There is no reason why Selena couldn't have discussed her schedule with her manager and made time for healthy meals. She wants to have an adult career, she should be thought responsible to make adult decisions. I'm sure she's learned her lesson now, just like most young adults who decide junk food is better than healthy food for long periods of time.
Amen to glowworm! Selena's actually diagnosis was not only malnutrition but also anemia. As an adult , I will assume she does not suffer from amenorrhea but has normal cycles which can lead even a normal woman to become anemic. I have a son who is calcium deficient even with vitamins, calcium supplements, and calcium enriched food. I forgot to mention he is 13 , 6'4" and 270lbs but is getting ready for another growth spurt and is probably going to hit at least 6'7". Just his foot is size 15 already and that is a whole foot ( pardon the pun) of bones. Not bad parenting, just something unique about him.
My own daughter had anemia even with vitamin pills. She had heavy periods and started college at 15. Are you suggesting that instead of giving her money for lunch I should sit there and make sure she eats?
A common diagnosis for a common problem amongst young women( psst kinda why docs give prenatal vitamins!) and yet you mom bash! When you raise 6 kids or even one kid, I might give you some credibility but till then talk to the hand .....that feeds six successful human beings!
Her "mommy" isn't the issue. I'm sure her mom made sure she didn't eat just candy as a child. She knows better she's 19. She needs to grow up and eat something.
She is an adult and should be responsible for her own actions as far as what she eats regardless of how she ate as a kid. She works for Disney, and they are really pushing healthy choices. At 19 you can't blame mommy for your health problems.
