Dora the Explorer Made Me Love My Body Again

Let's say you gave birth and you got the go-ahead to work out again from your doc. Did you head right back to the gym, lose all of that baby weight, and -- voila -- you were in perfect pre-pregnancy shape within a month or two? Or did you get the go-ahead from your doc ... and then didn't do anything because there's no time (or money) to hit a gym or hire a trainer. You know you need to exercise, you want to exercise, but you just can't seem to fit it in.

I was you. That was me ... and then I found the best new mom workout. I call it Body by Dora.

I worked out when Kiddo watched her TV shows. Not only are they the perfect workout length for those of us just getting back into the swing of things, but they have built-in timers. All you need is a pair of hand weights and a few at-home exercises you like. Then, whenever Dora the Explorer comes on, go to it.

See, Dora has a great structure -- for the first bit when they get their problem before they call for Map, that's your warm-up time, get that heart rate going, march in place, jog a bit around the coffee table. From Map through to when they get through the Icky Sticky Swamp, do some arm exercises -- bicep curls, side-arms, push-ups. Then, as they try to get by the Grumpy Old Troll, that's your lower body time. Hit the squats, lunges, and leg lifts. As they take Benny's hot air balloon to their final destination, that's when you have your core work with a few Pilates basics.

As they sing the "We Did it!" song, end with some jumping jacks, get that heart rate up -- you can go all out because you know it's almost over. And then, as the credits roll, stretch a bit ... and you are done. You just squeezed in a decent workout at home while Kiddo was watching TV!

Really, this workout can be done watching almost any kids' TV show. Lately, we've been watching Dinosaur Train over on PBS, which has two mini shows within the half-hour slot -- again, perfect to plan your workout by. Maybe do arms and legs in the first one, and then concentrate on your Pilates in the second. Once you reach Dr. Scott and his Dino 101 facts after each, it's cardio time.

I'm telling you -- Body by Dora is a great way for Mama to work out without having to go to the gym or when it's crappy weather out.

How do you fit in exercise?
