How does this happen? An obese 43-year-old man recently had to be removed from his home in Ohio by police because -- get this -- he fused to a chair he sat in for two years! Warning: Disturbing details ahead. The cops said he was covered in urine, feces, and maggots. Oh, dear! In order to get him to the hospital, the authorities had to cut a hole in a wall of his house. Unfortunately, he's since died.
Total sadness and general ickyness aside, I'm left with a feeling of bewilderment. Because two other people lived with the man. Including his girlfriend.
And they were completely able-bodied! In fact, the man's girlfriend used to feed him his food since he never got up. That's very kind of you, girlfriend, but how do you let it get to that point? How do you let someone you love get so over-the-top unhealthy and do nothing about it? Also, how did you live there?
According to one of the police officers, it was one of "the worst things" he's ever responded to. The most unbearable part being the smell. Three living, breathing humans lived here? I don't understand.
At the end of the day, though, this is a really sad story. Not only because the man died, but because of the fact that he wasn't always so obese. His landlord, who had apparently been his landlord at another building, said that he used to be a vital, active person. She also said that she checked on these tenants periodically, but never thought anything was wrong, since he always had a blanket over him.
Whenever I hear stories of people dying alone in their apartment, it makes me so sad. I feel awful for these lonely people, and I always think, "If only someone were there to do something." In this case, though, there was. So it only makes it sadder.
How bad do you feel for this man?

There comes a time when you must say something. That girlfriends "love" is pretty skewed if she thought allowing him to sit only in the chair and feed him because he was too lazy to get up
It just reminds me of a Nip/Tuck episode where there was a woman who had fused to her couch much in the same way (she too also died, and if I remember, I may have cried the first time I saw that episode, it was heartbreaking). And his girl friend pretty much "Loved him to death". Sometimes what you think is a good and kind thing is actually what hurt or killed someone. She may have thought that being there for him, and feeding him was in a way helping him, where in fact it hurt him in the worst possible way. But yes, it is a sad story, and I think something in that man's life had to have happened where he just lost all motivation to even make him self get up and walk to the bathroom.
I remember that Nip/Tuck episode too. This is disgusting, and I blame him too, why didn't he call 911 and explain the situation? Many things could have been done but weren't.
That is disgusting! Sad is not what I am feeling, more like grossed out and appalled. How long does it take for ones body to fuse to the furniture? In all that time he couldn't get of his a$$? I think not, that is just repulsive and lazy. And the others living in the house with him are equally disgusting.
Joyce-You don't know what happened in this man's life to make him loose all his self worth and motivation. I highly recommend that you watch the Nip/Tuck episode, it is season 3, episode 1. It might shed some light on what may have happened, and then maybe you can show a little more compassion for that man. Yes, it is gross but calling him lazy and that "if he had just got his ass up this wouldn't have happened" is heartless and narrow minded. It is easy for you to say those kinds of things because you couldn't fathom that kind of lifestyle, or how something like that came to be. You don't know what could have caused his downward spiral. A little compassion goes a long way. Do I think its gross, yes absolutely, and I don't want to think about what kind of state the house and the man were in, but at the same time I have compassion for him. His enablers I don't have compassion for, and I believe that they were in the wrong more then anything.
i'm shocked! shocked that neither one of those two people helped him in any possible way. just because you love someone does not mean that you let them rot and let them die! . it's sad.
omg how sad! and this totally reminds me of an episode on Nip/Tuck that sounded just like this
What a sad, sad story. How unhappy do you have to be to just sit in one spot for two years? I would like to believe that if someone I loved was just sitting there for a few days I would do something to help out and do my best to get them up and at 'em. Wow! I just don't know what else to say.
I'd like to know what kind of idiots he was living with that thought it was a good idea that this poor man was living in filth, literally rotting away, and not bothering to try and help him? They should be charged with SOMETHING!!! I mean, the stench had to be unbearable!! Wasn't that a big enough clue to these morons that something was WRONG?!?
