Breast Surgeon by Day, Knife Thrower by Night

knifeLike most surgeons, Dr. Ted Eisenberg likes to relax after a long day of surgery. The Philadelphia surgeon currently holds the world record for the most breast surgeries performed in his lifetime. Naturally, as a busy guy, you can imagine he could use a little breather, right?

While some sit down with a nice cup of tea in the comfort of their own home, Eisenberg, well -- he's less of a tea guy, and more of a knife fan. Not exactly done with the blade when he leaves the office, Eisenberg spends his spare time as a competitive knife thrower.

A surgeon who is a competitive knife thrower ... things could get weirder, right?

With more than 25 years of experience as a plastic surgeon, Eisenberg is fairly new to knife throwing. Inspired by action movies like the James Bond series (and what guy isn't), he told his wife one year that he wanted a throwing knife for the holidays. Soon enough, he was throwing bull's eyes as a knife and tomahawk tosser. He recently got back from the Annie Oakley Festival where he took first place as an intermediate. In his eyes, knife throwing is his way to have a little fun in his free time:

I take my work and patients seriously but I don't take myself seriously.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't know if the guy handling your boob in one hand and a sharp blade in the other should be confessing he's not all that serious of a guy. But I guess when you think about it, there could be a lot of other side-gigs that would make me more uncomfortable if I was thinking about getting some work done. What about having a doctor who was a habitual sky diver? Risk taking may be another one of those cautionary qualities in a doctor.

Either way you look at it, his excellent aim and passion for shiny objects just prove that he truly is good with a blade, doesn't it? I'd totally feel comfortable going to this man. But personally, I'm not trying to get any breast implants anytime soon ...

Do you think Dr. Eisenberg's knife throwing hobby is odd? Would you see him?
