Darth Vader Super Bowl Kid Has a Broken Heart

Emily Abbate

max pageMany of us felt the force with arguably the best commercial of Super Bowl XLV, brought to us by Volkswagen. The Internet is buzzing today about Max Page, the pint-sized villainous Darth Vader starring in last night's spot. The car commercial was pure cutesy genius, combining an adorable little boy, an oversized mask, and elements of an American classic movie. Looking at that adorable face, am I the only one who sees a miniature Anakin Skywalker?

Let me tell you something about this young Jedi that will both shock you and break your heart: The 6-year-old from California was born with a congenital heart condition.

Max was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot after birth, which could cause serious complications including delayed growth, heart arrhythmias, seizures, and death in some cases, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Max was taken to L.A.'s Children's Hospital for his first surgery at 3 months old and soon after, he was given the pacemaker that saved his life. Today, he feels fine, and continuously goes to the hospital for blood draws and checkups.

Max's mom, Jennifer, told Matt Lauer on this morning's Today Show, that they try to make the experience more fun than scary:

We take blankets and bears and try to not always make it so scary about appointments and blood draws and things like that. You know, he’s a real inspiration.

Precious, isn't it? Instead of letting the scary hospital visits freak him out, Max is living a healthy lifestyle and embracing life after overcoming his condition. Props to Jennifer for encouraging her son to do what he enjoys, especially after watching him go through such trauma at a young age. If you think you recognize this little Romeo, you may be right -- he's a regular on The Young and The Restless.

I don't know about you, but if I had any doubts about what my favorite Super Bowl commercial was after watching last night's lineup, I know now.

Max is absolutely loving his new Darth Vader costume and new found fame. One of the best parts? The frequent request for his autograph.
