While the cold weather may make you want to hibernate inside and not emerge until spring, there's a lot of fun to be had amidst all the snow and ice and frigid temperatures. While sun and sand are nice escapes, embracing all that winter has to offer with a cold-weather family vacation can be amazing too.
Here are five awesome spots for family vacations that actually make winter fun:
This tiny little town is adorable and has some of the best skiing in the country. There's hiking and restaurants, snow mobile riding and snow shoeing -- all in the midst of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the country. Check out newly remodeled The Hotel Columbia for amazing accommodations right at the foot of the mountain.
Straddling two states -- California and Nevada -- this beautiful destination offers something for everyone, all in the midst of the gorgeous blue lake at the epicenter. There's incredible skiing to be had, and gambling on the Nevada side. Plus, with an average of 300 days of sunshine, you'll get a great boost of Vitamin D. For lodging, check out Cal Neva, which was once owned by Frank Sinatra. Since it straddles both states, kids will have a blast traveling back and forth between the two in mere seconds.
Full of history and wonderful shopping and dining, Stowe is an amazing escape. No matter how cold you may be, a tour of the Ben & Jerry's factory is a must. You can even stay at the Trapp Family Lodge, which was founded by the family on which the musical The Sound of Music was based. The hills are alive ....
Beyond the amazing slopes, there are activities for everyone. From hot air balloon rides to snow tubing and museums, there's plenty to do on and off the slopes. Since its home to the Sundance Film Festival in January, teens will have fun knowing they're vacationing like the stars. Check out the Canyons Resort that has daily and nightly childcare, so mom and dad can get a little alone time too.
Just over the Washington border, you can add international travel to your vacation easily. World-renowned skiing plus an amazing village center boasting restaurants, night life and shopping makes Whistler a must. The Coca-Cola Tube park is fun for everyone. Check out the Whistler Town Plaza Suites that offer fully equipped kitchens, washers and dryers and other amenities.
