Last month, a Pew poll showed that 53 percent of Republicans said there is no evidence of climate change. Clearly, they're not interested in listening to the 97 percent of scientists who agree that human-created carbon emissions from cars, factories, etc. are turning up the temperature of our planet. But that's OK. Those of us who know what's really happening may get a kick out of the latest "fix" that researchers say could result in a healthier Earth: Birth control.
That's right. A new report from the Worldwatch Institute (an independent research organization that focuses on climate & energy, food & agriculture, and the Green Economy) states that better access to contraception could, in fact, fight global warming.
It all boils down to what seems to be a sensitive topic ... population control. Basically, the UN projects that the world's population will reach 9 billion by the year 2050. But if ladies have better access to family planning products and services, we could slow population growth—say, potentially leveling the number to 8 billion instead. The lowered world population would reduce CO2 emissions by more than if global deforestation were completely eliminated! Or by the equivalent of if the fuel efficiency of 2 billion cars were doubled from 13 kilometers per liter to 26 kilometers per liter.
This isn't the first report of its kind. Researchers have been saying for several years now that global warming and a woman's right to decide whether or not to have a child are inextricably linked. It makes sense: Every person on the planet makes a measurable carbon footprint.
Think this is all B.S. a la Al Gore? That's fine — for now, politics may stand a chance at drowning out science, but it doesn't change the fact that every year, 190 million women get pregnant, and a third of those women did not plan their pregnancy, according to the UN. That's obviously a problem that requires solving for many reasons unrelated to climate change.
As far as I'm concerned, better access to all forms of birth control (the Pill, condoms, IUDs, fertility awareness, even effectively using the Withdrawal Method!) and more comprehensive sex ed in schools (which would actually teach sexually active teens how to prevent a fate as MTV's next Teen Mom) means more women making educated, empowered decisions about their fertility and their overall health. A reverberating effect on the health of our environment is really just one more powerful upshot.
Do you think women should have better access to birth control?

I'm not sure why the first paragraph was necessary at all. If the point is to share research about population control/ birth control affecting the environment, why drag Republicans into it? Just curious. My daughter wasn't planned, but she's the best thing that ever happened to me and she still counts in my overall number of children I intend to have. I always planned to have three children, one came 4 years before I expected, but I'm still only planning to have two more children. So I guess the surprise one didn't negatively affect things too much.. and I would guess this sort of thing happens with others too.
um. Yeah. Once in a while I wish there was such as thing as a here's my middle finger sweet pea.
Why are unplanned pregnancies a problem?? ALL of ours were unplanned. I mean, we weren't trying to prevent it either, but I don't see the NEED to plan out our children/pregnancies.
Seems to me that there is pretty easy access to birth control. How are you going to make it easier? Ship it to every single house?
And, most large families (ALL that I know) are pretty green!
I sincerely hope that all your fellow liberals take head to that advice! ROFLOL Sorry, I crack myself up sometimes.
*headdesk* Reasons I'm a libertarian. You start this stuff, next thing it will be FORCED population control. Because for some people, it's not going to be enough to educate and give access, they will want to decide who what why when where and how. Slippery slope, and especially with Government, when rights are converted to privileges, it's the ordinary folks who get hurt.
I find the overall tone of this article insulting. The author has decided anyone who does not agree with a scientific hypothesis is an idiot. Well, may I remind you that not all scientists agree with global warming. A consensus does not a fact make - otherwise the world would still be flat and the center of the universe. Grow up.
I agree with you, Tayanna2! I'm sick of being told that because I don't agree with the leftists' point of view that I'm an idiot! Also, population control? Are you kidding me? First of all, there is sex ed in public schools (rather graphic sex ed at that!), so there is plenty of "information" out there for our kids to get their hands on. I've been hearing this crap since I was a kid, and guess what? There are still teenagers out there getting pregnant every freaking hour! It obviously doesn't work, but you want to push for more? How does that make any sense? Also, they don't like the idea that there are couples who go with their religion on this one and let God decide how many kids they have. So, they want to try to control it-they want to force more contraception, and soon, the government will be trying to force us to only have so many children per household. Here I thought we lived in America-not communist China!
You do realise that birth control is not 100% effective even when taken the right way......right? When did it become the schools responsibility to teach YOUR kid sex ed? Grow up already and teach them yourself.
