While every day should be focused on our health and fitness, today is the official one on the books to recognize it. Now, in its ninth year, more than 100,000 women are expected to participate in events across the country to celebrate National Women's Health and Fitness Day.
If you're looking to get inspired or try some new ways to find and maintain fitness, today is a great day to get some freebies and discounts. From hospitals to gyms, schools, and churches, community locations across the country are hosting a variety of events where you can score some great stuff.
Currently, there's no central location that lists all the different events -- though organizers say they're working on it for next year -- so your best bet is to fire up your favorite search engine and see what's going on in your neck of the woods and keep your eyes peeled for the logo (above).
Here's a sampling of just a few of the kinds of events happening:
- Gold's Gym is offering women free workouts and personal training through October 3 to promote the day.
- Various Anointed Hands Massage Therapy locations will offer women discounted massages.
- In Des Plaines, Illinois, women can participate in free spinning classes, get their body fat checked, and have a bone density screening.
- In Nashville, an all-day event offers free refreshments, health screenings, and exercise demonstrations, plus home-improvement tips and financial counseling.
Even if you can't find any events in your area, it's still a great day to commit or recommit to your health. Try a new class at your gym, go for a walk at lunch, or pick up some extra-fresh vegetables for dinner ... then keep up the habit all year long.
