Spooning With the Dog and Sex Dreams: Sleep Secrets

Tricia HoneaSleep -- we all do it, but talk about something personal! From side sleepers to wrapped in the covers on their tummy sleepers, we all do it differently.

We're delving into dreamland with moms' sleep secrets here on the The Stir, and today we're talking to Tricia Honea, the smart-talking mom of two behind Turning Trix, who lets us know it's more than OK to be irreverent about motherhood -- it's the only way to find sanity.

What are your best getting to sleep tips?

I don't usually have a hard time getting to sleep; it's the staying asleep that is difficult. After I had my second kid that didn't like to sleep, I invested $6 in a sleep mask. It saved my life.

When I put the mask on, it's like a sensory deprivation. I can't hear anything, see anything, and I'm out like a light. Not sure why it closes out the sound, but whatever, it works. Anyhow, I include one in all of my girlfriends' presents at their baby showers now.

Who's sleeping with you?

We have two dogs and two cats that like to sleep with us. One dog curls nicely to the body and is very accommodating. The other dog takes up as much room as she can. The cats sleep on us. The kids would sleep with us if they could, but there just isn't any room.

Who steal the covers?

Me, if the dogs aren't lying on the bed, that is.

How do you wake up in the morning and how long does it take you to get out of bed? What's the first thing you do?

I usually get woken up one of two ways, neither of them pleasant:

1. The cat, meowing and kneading my chest or

2. The oldest comes in the room and either touches my nose with one finger (you know when you can barely feel it, but you definitely can feel it). Either my nose or my foot. *shudder*

If I get woken up by the cat, then I usually push her off on to my husband to try to get him to let her out. If it's the kid then sad to say, I usually jump out of bed with a roar. I really hate waking up the second way.

Do you dream? Care to share one?

I know I dream, but I can't remember them all. I had a dream the other night that I got a job in Washington, DC, and was trying to figure out how I could work out the commute from Seattle to DC. It was really weird, but I was really excited about the job in my dream.

Also, every once in a while, I have a sex dream, those are always nice.
