Fed up with fruit snacks, like Fruit Roll-Ups, Fruit by the Foot, and Fruit Gushers, and their "false and misleading" marketing, a woman is suing General Mills.
She says they all contain partially hydrogenated oil, which is contrary to claims the company makes that they are "nutritious" and "healthy to consume."
According to Reuters, Payton McClure, a "lifelong consumer" of General Mills products, filed the class-action lawsuit "on behalf of purchasers of the fruit snacks" and seeks "compensatory and punitive damages, and other remedies."
Though they may contain trace amounts of trans fat, the company is allowed by the Food and Drug Administration to tout them as trans-fat-free since they contain less than 0.5 grams of the substance. Trans fats have been linked to increased risks for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes
It sounds to me like General Mills is following the rules, which is where the problem may lie -- with the rules. If something is labeled trans-fat-free, then shouldn't it be FREE of all trans fat?
But regardless, I've never considered any of these snacks to be healthy no matter what the marketing says. Have you?
Just another reason to focus on whole, unprocessed food whenever possible ... and to read the actual ingredients instead of just the front of the box when you don't.
What do you think of the lawsuit against fruit snacks?

Hmm ... even though the lawsuit may be deemed "stupid" by many, the upside is that if food manufacturers have to worry about the costs and aggravation of suits like these, maybe they'll think about making their food healthier. I dunno. Just a thought.
What in the world is wrong with people, ( are so money hungry) ( to lazy to get out and fin for yourself) come on give me a break, no one put a GUN TO HER CHILDREN'S HEAD AND DEMANDED THAT THEY EAT THE ROLLUPS, I mean be realistic, this is America and there was only one perfect person and that was and is the Son Of God, I just hope and pray that these people know what they are doing, There is a time when we all have to face Judgement day.
I agree with Suzanne. Companies DO get away with too much, though this may not be the way to address it.
There is a lawsuit for everything it seems.
There is absolutely no individual responsibility expected of people anymore. If your kid is getting fat, it's General Mills fault because you couldn't possibly figure out that Fruit by the Foot isn't healthy. Children are obese because McDonalds offers toys with their Happy Meals, not because mom got into the car, drove to McDonalds and purchased the fried food for the child. It's always someone else's fault. This might sound terrible, but I view it as survival of the fittest. If people aren't intelligent enough to realize that eating McDonalds twice a day is shortening their lives, maybe there's a reason...
I agree with toriandgrace, I mean come on already with these ridiculous lawsuits. We are the parents and it is time for some of them to take responsibility. We stand in front of a product and WE CHOOSE to buy it, no one is telling us what to buy. Common sense people, mabe we should go back to using some.
Here we go again......glad we don't buy those, just cuz it says fruit in the name doesn't mean much.
If something is labeled trans-fat-free, then shouldn't it be FREE of all trans fat?....I totally AGREE!!!!!
people sue over the craziest things
