Jewel graces the cover of the July edition of Shape and looks more than a little hot in the bikini she's rockin'.
The singer opens up and talks to Shape about her body image through the years and how she got in her current amazing shape after years of being overweight.
She says one of the most important keys to her current fitness is happiness.
"One thing I've figured out over the years is, the happier I am, the better my body feels," she says in an interview with the magazine. "What's funny is that everyone wants to be happy, but a lot of us don't realize what truly works."
She says after being dubbed by a newspaper as a "chubby Renée Zellweger" she ate an entire cake. Afterward she tried to throw it up, but couldn't.
"It made me think, ‘I can't go down this road.' I had seen so many performers develop eating disorders or try to control their weight with drugs, and I decided I would do no harm to my body."
She still continued to struggle with her body image, but has grown to love her flaws (as invisible as they seem to the rest of us) over the years.
"We should be more like men, God bless 'em. They can take their shirts off and show their man boobs, and they don't give a hoot. But women are so critical of themselves. We can be gorgeous and hot and still be embarrassed to wear a tank top. So if you can't stop looking in the mirror, at least try to not think badly about yourself when you do."
As for her diet, Jewel said she tries to avoid processed foods and eats lots of protein, healthy oils, and vegetables, but also gives in to her cravings occasionally for things like cupcakes.
Do you agree with Jewel that happiness is key to fitness?
