Photo by yachtfanMy Memorial Day weekend was filled with family (and friend) barbecues, leaving little time for the gym. While I tried to stick to healthy cookout fare, what I now need is a kick in the pants to get me back in the workout swing of things.
Instead of trudging on the treadmill or spinning my life away, I'm turning to the drill sergeant people who routinely whip a bevy of celebrity butts, abs, legs, and arms into shape. I'm talking celebrity trainers. Of course, I don't have a celebrity bank account, so my celeb trainer workouts have to get a little more creative.
Thanks to technology, I can gather all the trainers to the stars in one place -- my living room.
Photo by Amazon.comHarley Pasternak may have a name that doesn't roll easily off the tongue, but what he does have is an arsenal of books, DVDs, and even his own snack foods and meal delivery plan. Among his celebrity clients are gorgeous Alicia Keys; Kanye West, whose workout is said to include foot-in-mouth lifts; and John Mayer, who is probably spending a lot more time at the gym now that he's not getting any. Pasternak's 2004 release, 5 Factor Fitness: The Diet and Fitness Secret of Hollywood's A-List, which he co-wrote with Ethan Boldt, is available used at Half.com for as low as 75 cents and at Amazon.com for $2.82. Pasternak's 5-Factor Fitness three-DVD set and meal plan is available at Amazon.com for $39.95. As of yet, his DVDs are not offered through Netflix.
Photo by Amazon.comCelebrities including Andy Garcia, Mario Lopez, and Drew Barrymore swear by Mark Blanchard's power yoga. (I'm not a huge fan of yoga, but those who like it seem to really like it, so I thought I would include him.) Currently, two of Blanchard's DVDs are available via Netflix, his 2003, three-DVD Mark Blanchard: Progressive Power Yoga, and his 2009 DVD Mark Blanchard's Progressive Power Yoga: Prenatal Pregnancy Routines (listed as soon to be released). Half.com offers Blanchard's 2009 Progressive Power Yoga Vol. 1 for $11 and Mark Blanchard's Progressive Power Yoga: Prenatal Pregnancy Routines for $12.85, both new. There's also Mark Blanchard: Progressive Power Yoga Trilogy for $44.99.
There are two celebrity trainer ladies who are (in)famous for cracking the exercise whip and transforming celebrities (and average Joes) into fitness superstars.
Photo by Amazon.comThe first, Jackie Warner, is a star in her own right, having been the cog in the wheel of Bravo's cable television show, Work Out, for three seasons. Warner owns her own gym, Sky Sport Spa, and runs her own version of boot camp, Skylab. Both are pricey, and both are located in Southern California. Lucky for the rest of us, Warner has two DVDs available via Netflix, 2008's Workout: One-on-One Training With Jackie, and 2009's Training With Jackie: Circuit Training. I've tried them both, and they're fun and effective. Warner's Circuit Training DVD is also available via Half.com for $8.78 new. Both DVDs are sold at Amazon.com for $11.49 (Circuit Training) and $10.49 (One-on-One), both new.
Photo by Amazon.comLast, but certainly not least, is teeny-tiny powerhouse Tracy Anderson of the Tracy Anderson Method, the woman known for the lean looks of both Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. Anderson also runs two studios, one in Los Angeles and one in New York City. But you don't have to head to one of Anderson's studios to train with her (although wouldn't it be scary as hell fun to work out with Madge?), as Anderson has DVDs galore. Unfortunately, Anderson's DVDs are not available via Netflix or sold at Half.com, so you're gonna pay more, but if you don't feel the burn and see results, you're just not doing it right -- take it from me. Anderson's routines require little more than room to move and a chair to balance with. You can buy any of her DVDs at her website, including Tracy Anderson Perfect Design Series: Sequence I, Tracy Anderson Perfect Design Series: Sequence II, Tracy Anderson Perfect Design Series: Sequence III, Tracy Anderson Beginner Dance Cardio, Tracy Anderson Dance Cardio II, Tracy Anderson Dance Cardio Workout, Tracy Anderson Mat Workout, and Tracy Anderson Post Pregnancy Workout. Each DVD is $29.95 (equal to the going rate on Amazon.com).
Thankfully, working out with a celebrity trainer doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg -- but it will likely make said limbs sore.
