Running Essentials: A Great Playlist

Finishing my first 5K
a month or so ago was because of a lot of things: Good training, motivating environment, comfy shoes. On that list, though, is definitely some great music playing in my ears.

Melissa Etheridge's song "I Run for Life" had me both near tears and running faster on the course than I ever ran in training, and I recommend it to all new runners. (Julie loves the song too.)

One thing you might not think about when you're putting together a running playlist is that not all songs should be get-you-across-the-finish-line tunes. You don't want every song in your rotation to be heart-pumping pop songs. Some need to be slower and cooler to keep you at a good pace as you get each mile under your belt.

Some other songs I love, of all variety of speeds, are: "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, Cake's "He's Going the Distance," and Bright Eyes' "First Day of My Life."

Music (for me) is crucial to a successful exercise routine. So, finding the right songs is just as crucial.
