Hypoallergenic Dogs for Obama's Kids

The Stir Bloggers

In his victory speech, Obama told his daughters that they'd finally get the puppy they've always wanted. But the on the radio recently, I heard Obama say he needed a full-bred dog--not a mutt--because one of his girls is allergic to dogs.

The New York Times is also talking about Obama and his kids' pet allergies. And so are CafeMoms: sharebearII recently joked in The CafeMom Newcomers Club that Obama should get a pitbull without lipstick.

Meanwhile, my own twins are begging for a puppy. But I'm the same way: I'm allergic to pet fur. Even so, I have a love affair with my long-haired, cuddly cat. I'd love to get a dog that doesn't make me itch like I have fleas.

I found this article from dogbreedinfo.com on the most hypoallergenic dogs. Here are my 10 picks from the story (that is, if paying for the puppy from a breeder were not an object):

  • American Hairless Terrier
  • Bichon Frise
  • Chinese Crested
  • Cockapoo
  • Doodleman Pinscher
  • Havanese
  • Maltese
  • Shih-Tzu
  • Toy Poodle
  • Yorkshire Terrier

Do you or your children have pet allergies? What kind of hypoallergenic dog would you get?
