Weight-Loss Calendar: Week One

It took me nearly a year after having my son to decide it might just be time to do something about the baby weight. I could prattle off a very convincing list of reasons why it took so long, but it basically boils down to this: I wasn't motivated enough. When you're ready, you're ready. When you're not ... you're a slave to the doughnuts, am I right?

Then, at the first of this year, something shifted. I decided 2010 would be my year to work-out more, eat better, push myself harder and finally enjoy this post-baby body.


Once a week, I'm going to share with you an update on my weight-loss and fitness goals and offer any tips, tricks or frustrations I'm currently dealing with. I'll be honest with you, right down to the numbers. I don't think even Gwyneth Paltrow would enjoy sharing her weight, but it's not as if people don't have eyes. Might as well be straight about it. 

I started the year at 178 pounds, 14 pounds above my pre-pregnancy weight. Think of all the cute clothes just gathering dust in my closet! Oh, those poor, poor clothes. So, this week -- about 10 weeks later -- I weighed in at 160 (down 18 lbs). That's ... not too shabby, right? Oh, how I wish I could tell you I found THE magic combination of carb-loading and couch-surfing that led to magical weight-loss, but it came off with regular work-outs (both running and letting Jillian Michaels routinely kick my ass) and eating much less and much healthier. I've also given up alcohol for Lent and meat for the month of March.

I'll run my first 5K in less than two weeks and then another 5K six weeks after that. Whoa, it makes me tired just thinking about all that running.

I spent so long accepting that I had just become an overweight person and coming to terms with the fact that feeling sexy and looking good were things of the past, lost along with a stretch-mark-free stomach. But, I'm reclaiming it all, little by little. It's been so long since I've been able to say that I'm proud of myself and proud of what I've done for myself.
