breakfastHow many times have you heard breakfast is the most important meal of the day? At least a million, right? Maybe a gazillion. Funny. None of us really seem to treat it that way.

Here we all are, going about our daily lives, cramming the "most important meal" into our traps while we do 65 on the way to work ... or worse, in the bathroom, right after teeth brushing but before eye liner application. Oh don't lie, you've done it. Or a variation of it (slumped on the couch watching Good Morning America while you spoon cereal in counts too). But before you start feeling all guilty and hit up Pinterest for some fancy schmancy table settings for that unused breakfast nook to redeem yourself, do not despair! There are people out there who have eaten the big meal in much crazier places than you! And yes ... that important meal still got them through the day.

Behold some of the strangest places people have munched their toast and waffles:

4 Times Breakfast in Front of the Television Is OK

Eating food in front of the television gets a bad rap. And for good reason. Teaching children good eating habits usually involves mindful eating and the television makes that impossible. Of course, this fact makes eating in front of the TV the holy grail of special treats.

My children who are 3.5 and 5 get ridiculously excited when we do family pizza and movie night. It usually involves a movie we all want to see, a large pizza, and many laughs. Sure, it isn't something I would do every day and for every meal, but as a special treat, my kids love it. And so do I.

Breakfast, on the other hand, is another story. It's the most important meal of the day and one I really want my kids to eat well. Additionally, we are almost always pressed for time in the morning, so a TV show is pretty much out of the question. Still, there are times TV and breakfast go hand in hand. These include:

Anyway, in honor of my affinity for this particular meal, here are 10 great quotes about breakfast. Yum.

egg frittataLet's be honest: Eating a healthy, balanced breakfast can be difficult -- especially when it seems like all the "on-the-go" options are much faster, more convenient, and more appealing than going to your stove and making scrambled egg whites for the bazillionth time. Believe me -- I used to think that was the best way to go, and although I'd jazz 'em up with peppers, onions, spinach, etc., it's really just the same ol', same ol'.

But ever since I've been trying to get more lean protein into my diet -- especially in the morning! -- eggs are a must. But same ol' eggs just won't cut it. Boredom is like Kryptonine to a healthy lifestyle! Thus, I've explored various techniques to mix it up and "do eggs" in unexpected ways. Turns out, there are so many awesome options!

breakfast in bedLet's get real for a minute: Who doesn't love breakfast in bed? Eggs, toast, your pillow. It's one of life's great, affordable luxuries that, for some reason, we Americans rarely indulge in. Why are we so uncouth? Why are we not eating the most important meal of the day in the most important place in our house more often?

Starting now, it is my personal mission in life to make breakfast in bed more pervasive throughout our nation. I'm not joking. We're always complaining how we're over-worked, over-tired, and over-stressed -- why not add a dash of whimsy to our lives every once in a while? Really, b in b doesn't take all that much work. Just a little creativity and some planning.

Quick & Healthy Breakfast Smoothies to Jump Start Your Day

breakfast smoothiesBreakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but that doesn't mean you always have to make it a huge production. In fact, lots of people (*raises hand!*) can't always stomach a lot of heavy foods like oatmeal or eggs so early in the morning.

Recently, I started drinking my breakfast on some mornings instead of eating it, and let me tell you, I can totally tell the difference. Not only are fruit smoothies jam-packed with fiber and vitamins, but liquids in the morning are supposed to be gentler on the digestive system, and I definitely feel lighter. At first, I was suspect that blended fruit and juice could get me through until lunch, but once I got used to it, I found it very satisfying. And, I even felt like I had more energy.

I've been experimenting with different fruits and fruit juices (with no sugar added). Here are some of my favorite combinations so far:

rainbow pancakeAh breakfast, the most important meal of the day. When it comes to toddlers, however, it can also become one of the most frustrating meals of the day. You want them to start the day off right, but sometimes, nothing just seems right enough for them to eat.

After awhile I even get bored of making it. Fortunately, whether you're dealing with a picky eater or just want to add a little extra fun to your morning, there are plenty of ways to take breakfast and make it even better.
